The swine flu was around in about 1957 and I bet if you look it up you will not see news of an epidemic or pandemic. Those of us alive at that point don't remember any. How many people were killed??? And right now the insurance and medicine industries are doing their best to rip us off. Did you hear Keith last night?? 4 dollar medicine sold for over 270 dollars??? What kind of money do you think they make on millions of doses of flu vaccine each year?

and I don't remember a pandemic either. If people feel vulnerable to the flu virus, then by all means get a vaccination. Everyone's immune system is different.

The 1957 flu epidemic killed some 70,000 people in this country. I had it, at age 12. Two kids in my junior high class of about 100 died from complications of that flu. There's a good bit of information on the web about the epidemic, if you care to look.

The Hong Kong flu epidemic of 1968-69 was also a nasty one, and killed some 700,000 people worldwide. I got that one, too, and with my wife at the time, was very sick, almost hospitalized.

Time passes. Our memories are dimmed by that passage. However, there is plenty of information available, if you look for it.

Flu epidemics are nothing to minimize. They can be extremely serious, with many people dying. Most people survive just fine, but that's small comfort for the families of those who die...like the 6 year old boy in the Twin Cities who died this week. He's not a statistic to his family, I can guarantee.

The flu vaccine saves lives every year, and I expect the H1N1 vaccine will save many lives this year. It is a disservice to promote not getting that vaccine, especially when it is based on bad information. That is why you will find me in these anti-vaxxer threads, making that very point.

For those who do not wish to get the flu shot, more power to you, and good luck with that. I find the vehemence with which the anti-vaxxers are seeking out and publishing misinformation, however, to be tantamount to practicing medicine without a license.

Virtually every piece of information posted by the anti-vaxxers here on DU comes from questionable sources, linked with alternative medical groups or conspiracy theory groups. That's irresponsible, in my opinion, and I will say so as often as is necessary in these threads.

Homeopathy is bogus, and any source connected with homeopathetic practitioners or advocates is bogus as well, when it comes to medical information. The same is true with conspiracy theorists of any bent. Their information should not be considered to be factual.

This is, of course my opinion. I will continue to express that opinion in these threads.

and I don't remember much about polio back then either, except that there was some great news about a vaccine.

The '57 pandemic, it seems, was pretty bad when you look it up, but that's only part of it. Influenza in its various forms has been a major killer around the world for along time, and hasn't been wiped out like smallpox and other epidemic diseases. It is, as far as I know, the only remaining epidemic disease that remains able to speedily spread worldwide and cause the deaths of millions in its wake.

We haven't seen the deaths of millions like we did in 1918 because of better public health, less virulent strains, and less severe winters when we have had major outbreaks, but such an epidemic is still possible, and everyone in public health is terrified at the thought.

The Spanish flu infected possibly 500 million people (one third of the population at the time) and killed between 50 and 100 million worldwide. No one expects swine flu to be that bad, but to do nothing after knowing what influenza is capable of is an obscenity.

Drug companies do make a lot of money, probably more than they should, but to use that as an excuse for avoiding protection against one of the great killers out there is insane.

8. I don't understand the extreme reaction to this issue

These people are asking that people make fully informed decisions when considering vaccines and offer resources to research the subject more. I don't see these people as extremists or whackos and the intolerance I've seen at DU is very disappointing.

and I have mixed feelings about vaccinations and the fear-mongering that stands to benefit the pharmaceutical industry. I would hardly put these people in the category of "truthers".
