*sigh*

but good on Harry Connick, Jr.

Harry said, "I just wanted to say on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that, we take it really to heart. I know it was in good fun, and the last thing I want to do is take this show to a down level—because you know how much I love this show and this country—but I feel like I’m at home here, and if I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably—I definitely wouldn’t have done it.”

1. Harry Connick Jr. was a gentle man and a good person.
That took some conviction and courage.

2. My take on racism in Australia
I have lived here for 2 years now and this is my opinion only.

I do not believe that the average white Aussie is racist with hate for anybody of darker skin.
I do believe that the average white Aussie does not think that the Aboriginal population could ever take care of themselves.
I do believe that it is the subtle racism of lowered expectations that exists here. It is hard to explain but it seems more accepted to make jokes here that make me cringe when I hear them in public. I have heard one white guy call out to another white guy across a crowded office "Hey my nigger how ya been" and I was the only one who looked up in surprise.

4. Curious.
Have you ever asked anyone why do they believe the Aboriginal people cannot take care of themselves? I'd like to know how do they come up with these justifications.

Have you ever asked anyone why do they believe the Aboriginal
people cannot take care of themselves? I'd like to know how do
they come up with these justifications.

As an Australian who lived and worked in New Orleans after
Katrina and now works in Houston, i want to add my 2 cents. I
lived in rural Australia for 40years before coming to America.
Aussies do not think that the Aboriginals are useless and
cannot take care of themselves. The problem in Australia is
that even if you have 1:100th aboriginal blood in you, you
receive benefits. This causes a lot of tension as you have
white people claiming to be Aboriginal getting money and not
working.

I lived and worked with full blood and half caste Aboriginals
and you can't get nicer people.

Now as for the "controversy" on the Hey Hey It's
Saturday Reunion show. 3 out of the 4 doctors were BLACK. So
how can this be racist. OK they were Indians and middle
Eastern impersonating "African-Americans" but so
what? If you ever go to Kenya or Rwanda and ask the Africans
what they think of African-Americans you will be told that
they do not recognize the term. In fact they get offended by
black Americans calling themselves African-Americans. So does
that make them racist? It is time to get over the political
correct crap for the sake of peace. Political correctness
doesn't bring peace but division.

9. You say "get over it"...
...but you seem to have absolutely no idea what African Americans have had to get over, nor do you seem to care.

The fact is, the past DOES matter--because it wasn't really that long ago. Minstrel shows, in which white people smeared on black face, put on "nappy" wigs, and acted like slow-witted imbeciles? These were extraordinarily popular forms of entertainment in this country since the 19th century, and only became universally unacceptable in the civil rights era--meaning many African Americans today can still remember this practice. This was the dictionary definition of kicking black people when they were down, and it's offensive because, to a man, black people were NEVER portrayed as anything but mentally inferior to everybody else in these productions--that's where the "humor" came from. Indian? Middle Eastern? Doesn't matter.

PS: I should like to know where you get your "facts" about Rwandans and Kenyans. There is nothing about the term "African American" that isn't inherent within the expressions "Irish American" or "Jewish American"--both express pride in ancestry while acknowledging patriotism for one's birth county. Either ban all such expressions or kindly STFU.

7. I wonder
When did bad taste in humor become racism? I mean that looked like a gong show ripoff to me and if it was in any way true to the original then anything goes would be the order of the day. Why so serious harry? Lounge act albums not selling? Need another 15 minutes?
