1. You can - if they think you will kill yourself they will admit you to Psych.

3. where is the emergency rm free?
anywhere I've lived, the emergency room has not been free. they charge a fortune just to walk in the door. I got charged about $1000 bucks to have 6 stitches in my foot plus the Dr. who stitched me up sent me a bill for over $600.

and (after waiting 1-5 hrs, bleeding or not) before they will admit you or treat you in any way, you go visit someone who asks you, "whose paying for this?"

so I just don't get the "they can go to the emergency room" excuse.

am I missing something?

5. ER is outrageously expensive.
But, if you choose to lie and give them a fake name, then it's possible you might get out of paying for your treatment. Basically when they tell the uninsured to go to the ER, they are telling people to assume a fake identity.

10. Exactly...
How in the hell can they charge for walking into the building, are they charging me rent for the 5 hrs. they milk you for time ?
The steel and glass is not providing me care, the doctor is, what a fucking racket , but my greatest bill for not having insurance
came from REMSA , A Reno based ambulance service that charge me 900 bucks for a 2 mile ride, just a ride, not even a band-aid.

12. I think what the Repubs mean
...when they bring up the ER in this context is that ERs can't refuse to treat you. They fail to follow up with the fact that the ER can certainly bill you for any treatment they are obligated to provide.

6. They'll admit you to a loony bin. Trust me, you'll end up worse off than before.
"Emergency care" for mental health is basically "warehousing" a person until the facility decides the patient is no longer a threat to him- or herself or others.

Conditions are usually dreadful and the patient has no control over the kind of "care" he or she receives.

A Californian on Medi-Cal will be "incarcerated" in the nearest county facility. Even if you drive to what you hope will be a better hospital, they will send you home to serve your time.

Last time this happened to me, I decided I would rather die than go back to that hellhole. Said hellhole has been removed due to budget cuts, only to be replaced by another hellhole an hour away (or so I have been told by people I trust in the medical community).

8. It's the same thing with these people
I teach at a conservative college and I swear to God I have this same damn stupid argument with them everyday. WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU CAN GO TO AN EMERGENCY ROOM, you dumb asses (I never have the energy to get into it with them over how dumb this advice is for all of us). These bullshit congressmen telling their constituents to "just go to an emergency room" would not, for one month, give up the preventative medicine they expect everyone else to do without. It makes me sick to my stomach to even listen to these rich assholes who, because they are whores that service the insurance industry, convince people to be outraged by reform that could considerably improve their lives.

16. The City of Austin has a program to help low income people with no insurance-
you can apply and get a card that seems to me to be a lot like Canadian care. It does take a little bit longer for appointments, but it is a Godsend for those without insurance or the means to afford it. Also, many/most of the medications for depression are offered through this program with a $5-10 co-pay-another Godsend for many Austinites.
