My contention is that a politician's usual goal is to keep things from changing. Straddle the fence. The people who didn't want change are happy and he can tell the ones who wanted it, "hey, we tried".

I think a lot of voters, however, just vote for the party. They don't really keep up with what's really happening. And of course, that behooves the GOP to keep their remaining supporters in the dark.
