Real Canadians Talking Real Health Care

by Karoli on September 2, 2009 · Comments

in News, Patients, Video

As our health care debate has overheated, myths about the Canadian health care system abound. The Republicans and the media are using the Canadian system to criticize everything from the public option to breast cancer treatment as they continue to stonewall any reform. This video, and more like it, might finally change the debate by forcing the American media to get off their arses and go tell the truth about Healthcare around the world, and how it towers over the wretched mess we have in the United States. Too many lives are running out of time.

Why this video? Why now?

In the spirit of truth, my friend Matte Black (@Shoq on Twitter) and his brother took their video camera to Canada on vacation to interview Canadians about their health care system. When we talked about it, I asked him to try to get negative views with specifics for balance. Here is the result. It has been edited for brevity, but the negative views were not removed, because there were none. He could not find one Canadian who thought they should kill the system. These are everyday people. They have no agenda at all other than being patriotic Canadians.

Please watch it and share it with as many people as you can.

2. More propaganda from the socialist dictatorship to the north.
You can tell they're not real Canadians because, as everyone knows, Canadians don't speak English.

3. LOL
"It would be helpful to the discussion if they knew what they were talking about."

That line sums it up perfectly...

Ms. Pelosi and Ms. Boxer could take a lesson in debate from this man.

7. This is all true, from a Canadian, but lets say for a minute that it wasn't....
It's not like Canada is the only country with universal health care. Well actually the US is the only, westernized, country without. So it's not like there aren't A LOT of other examples to choose from as well. They love to bash our system because we are easy targets but I hear hardly a peep about Germany, France, England, Taiwan, Japan, etc etc etc... many of which have systems even better than Canada's.

The whole argument is ridiculous.

10. I tend to despise any nationalistic feelings...
but honestly, as a Canadian citizen of almost a decade now (I grew up in Texas and the U.K.), knowing that my taxes paid for that woman to fight her breast cancer makes me feel proud.

As a healthy young person who rarely has to go to the doctor, I don't feel ripped off or taken advantage of. I feel great that that lady could get her hearing problem taken care of, and that man could get his thyroid problem looked at, with the help of myself and my neighbours, and yes, our government(and yes, there's a 'u' in neighbours).

BTW, all of the people in that video were either from Ontario or Quebec, but I can tell you that out in the overwhelmingly conservative West (Alberta), people would tell you the same thing. Politics doesn't enter into it. We take care of each other in Canada. Makes me swell with pride (another emotion I dislike).

Get your act together, comrades to the South! You deserve this kind of system. Everyone does.

11. I'm sitting here crying
Blue Cro$$/Blue $hield still hasn't paid my neurosurgeon for my craniotomy that was performed in January (even though they promised to pay 100%). And they are sending the check to my estranged husband, because he is the subscriber, and I am just the spouse. However, if my husband does not fork that money over, the surgeon's office comes after *me* because I am the patient.

I want to move to Canada!

12. "They have no agenda at all other than being patriotic Canadians." - beware of that
Most Canadians, truly, will not show any weakness in front of Americans, I say this as a Canadian. And as someone who worked as a journalist in Canada for roughly six years, three spent with the CBC in Vancouver as well as being a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, I can tell you there are SERIOUS problems with the Canadian health care system.

When I was a reporter in a small town, the hospital was in constant threat of being shut down, they couldn't get doctors, one woman gave birth to her child in a car on the way to a larger city because there was no one to help deliver in the town, and the larger centre had no spare ambulances.

All of this is happening because the liberals needed to show they were producing surplus budgets so they made cuts, then the conservatives were just being typical bastards with, in my opinion, the motive to make the system crap so they could argue for a two-tier system.

Then you get to the provincial governments, who are responsible for the rest of the funding... they make and do the same kind of cuts. In BC, an ambulance ride costs $100 now. And that's just ridiculous.

20. Many people have health care horror stories...
and giving birth in a car is no treat, but you can find worse horror stories than that by far on the health care related forums on this site alone.

You're right that politicians meddle with these programs to suit their political goals, but you know as well as I do that if we polled or had some kind of referendum on whether we should abandon our health care system in Canada and leave everyone to their own devices the result would be a resounding vote of confidence in our system.

There will always be problems, of course. But some of these problems, like the lack of doctors you cite, are results of having a perverse system directly to the South where incredible sums of money are being made off the sick and dying, and ambitious doctors from around the world want to get their slice of the pie.

I hardly think we should be discouraging the already discouraged from reaching out to take what they and every breathing person in this world deserve.

I'm just saying that making out Canada to be some health care utopia is misleading.

in this regard.

And the USA is definitely not one of them.

18. The flaw in the GOPs argument is the scary socialized medicine hasn't been overturned by all other..
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 11:46 PM by GivePeaceAchance
industrialized nations in favour private insurance. If it was anything near as bad as they tried to say socialized medicine would be just concept than utilized by most other nations.
