PS---I'm amazed by the alternate reality that and live in. I'd be very curious to know how they'd react after being forced to watch Rachel's segment?

It's one of the most frightening things about these people. They are utterly incapable of reason or reflection. They cannot and will not recognize their own motivations no matter how obvious they seem.

Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 03:28 PM by booley
As long as they refuse to admit they are wrong, they are right.

http://www.don-lindsay-archive.org/skeptic/arguments.html#dogged

It's also why they not only scream but continue to scream and argue well past the point any sensible person would.

Because they are counting on you either being sensible and giving up before they do or be becoming so frustrated that you lose your cool and start screaming back and thus making your own irrational arguments.

To them, either is a "win"

52. Even if you forced them to watch, it would not matter...
They would deny the legitimacy of the source, they would attack Rachel as a "homosexual agenda pusher", they would quickly go straight into projection of their hatred and their lunacy onto anyone daring to disagree.

Its sad but true at this point...Americans who actually WANT to believe Obama is out to get them are finding all the fertilizer they need leaking out of the heads of the right wing press and this is where having a fatally weakened Republican Party has actually HURT Democrats.

In the days when responsible, sane people were involved in the Republican Party - granted THAT number was in decline for 30+ years already - there was at least some semblance of restraint that they would impose on the lunatic fringe. NOW, all that is left in the Republican tent IS the lunatic fringe and they are literally "going for broke".

To my fellow Americans, those who DO love this country and want to see us regain some kind of reality based footing in the real world, DOCUMENT this stuff relentlessly. We are history's eyes and ears at this moment. Blog about it. Write about it. Read about it. Talk about it. Things go "viral" on the internet all the time...but usually its the moronic and the sophomoric. Make this different. Make this the viral sensation that shows the world the opposition's true colors and true intentions...

How many people compared Bush* to Hitler in February 2003 before we went into Iraq here in the U.S.?

15 million U.S. citizens marched in the streets on February 15, 2003, ad I was among them. We came from all walks of life to stand up and voice our dissent to what was occurring in our name. Yes, there were a few bad apples who threw out derrogatory remarks, but they were never endorsed by the movement leaders.

29. Frank Schaeffer was once REALLY big stuff in the Christian right
Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 12:16 AM by Douglas Carpenter
Frank Schaeffer was once REALLY big stuff in the Christian right - a favorite speaker at all the important conventions. His father, the late Francis Schaeffer was probably the most important fundamentalist-Protestant scholar of the later half of the 20th Century.

Frank Schaeffer tells the story of his own background and his enlightenment in this book:

Crazy for God:

How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back

Amazon link:

http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-God-Helped-Religious-Almost/dp/0306817500/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1249648516&sr=1-1

From Google Book Search:

http://books.google.com/books?id=mJIKlq2v6WAC&dq=frank+schaeffer+crazy+for+god

Book overview

By the time he was nineteen, Frank Schaeffer’s parents, Francis and Edith Schaeffer, had achieved global fame as bestselling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands in arenas around America, publish his own evangelical bestseller, and work with such figures as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Dr. James Dobson. But all the while Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, precipitating a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his departure—even if it meant losing everything.

With honesty, empathy, and humor, Schaeffer delivers “a brave and important book” (Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog)—both a fascinating insider’s look at the American evangelical movement and a deeply affecting personal odyssey of faith.

50. Frank Schaeffer also wrote 3 semi-autobiographical novels knows as "The Calvin Becker Trilogy"
Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 10:15 AM by Douglas Carpenter
In these three semi-autobiographical novels, Portofino , Zermatt and Saving Grandma; Frank Schaeffer tells the story through the eyes of his alter-ego, Calvin Becker about a young boy growing up in Europe, the son of a famous fundamentalist-Protestant theologian and scholar.

All three books are fantastic reads and tell an absolutely hilarious story - especially to those who have a fundamentalist background or have an interest in this American religious phenomena.

Portofino

By Frank Schaeffer

http://books.google.com/books?id=6iQFGwAACAAJ&dq=Portofino+Frank+Schaeffer&hl=En

Book overview

Calvin is the son of a missionary family, and their trip to Portofino is the highlight of his year. But even in the seductive Italian summer, the Beckers can't really relax. Calvin's father could slip into a Bad Mood and start hurling potted plants at any time. His mother has an embarrassing habit of trying to convert "pagans" on the beach. And his sister Janet has a ski sweater and a miniature Bible in her luggage, just in case the Russians invade and send them to Siberia. His dad says everything is part of God's plan. But this summer, Calvin has some plans of his own ... Portofino is the prequel to the noted trilogy that includes Zermatt. A huge bestseller, Portofino has been translated into seven languages.

Zermatt

By Frank Schaeffer

http://books.google.com/books?id=tMwtWxGcLk8C&dq=the+Calvin+Becker+trilogy&lr=&hl=En

Book overview

A sequel to Portofino takes readers on a hilarious, poignant coming-of-age journey as Calvin, a fourteen-year-old boy from a fundamentalist family, confronts his first sexual feelings while on a ski trip to Switzerland, enjoying his first sexual encounters with a waitress.

Saving Grandma

By Frank Schaeffer

http://books.google.com/books?id=tNtHXDD_siAC&dq=the+Calvin+Becker+trilogy&lr=&hl=En

Book overview

This final entry in the Calvin Becker trilogy continues the story of an utterly unpredictable family—filled with the same wit, warmth, and flashing insight that earned widespread acclaim for Portofino and Zermatt. Calvin Becker’s family have survived and persisted as Bible-thumping missionaries; it’s their duty to spread the Word to everyone they meet. But now, having weathered a crisis precipitated by the godless Swiss, they face an even greater spiritual challenge right in their own home: Grandma. Foulmouthed, foul-tempered, and heathen through and through, she’s staying in the spare room, recuperating from a broken hip—and making it next to impossible for the Beckers to do the Lord’s work. Calvin’s pious mom is determined to save Grandma’s soul, even if she’s doing it through gritted teeth and deadly measures. His father’s spending more and more time in his room, blasting opera to drown out the old lady’s voice. And Calvin wishes things would just get back to normal so they can go on vacation and he can get close to the girl he loves. But then Calvin starts to understand Grandma a little better and appreciate her a little more. After all, misery loves company.

Fox 'News' needs to be shut down. Oh wait, they have a 'right' to not tell the truth.
OK. We have a right to NOT buy any product that appears during their commercials.

Come on folks. This really is simple. How much is Mur'dick' losing?

Let's end Faux News.

Start telling the sponsors of Faux News your feelings. DO IT EVERY DAY!

AND follow through. DON'T buy products sponsored on their TV machine.

Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 12:46 PM by renate
A boycott of ALL products advertised on Faux News would probably be pretty tough (I've literally never watched it except for the clips on Countdown and TRMS, though, so maybe not). It would certainly get Murdoch's attention. I wonder whether a really widespread boycott of the products on just one program would scare them enough to bring about some change. Glenn Beck would be a good one although those Fox and Friends people irritate me with just their faces, even before they open them up.

Anyway, welcome to DU!

Edited to add:
Clearly, I am an idiot. I didn't even know about this boycott:

54. City Club of Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio April 5, 1968
The words of Robert F. Kennedy....though he lived and died before I was even born I often find myself wondering what might this country have become had RFK lived and won election in 1968 and re-election in 1972? An early end to Vietnam...no Watergate...no Nixon presidency laying the groundwork for Reagan to attack and dismantle the New Deal. All lost to assassination. All lost to an alternate history, one where the bullet missed and Sirhan was stopped.

We are once again edging to the precipice.
Obama was able to get further than RFK...he did not fall in the campaign, he did take office, but now the message is being sent loud and clear to the unglued fringe of the right ---- "STOP THIS MAN BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY". (With all sincere apologies - and certainly a bitter irony - to Malcolm X).

Schaeffer is right...its a message and its being delivered daily with plausible deniability by the usual suspects. I believe that I am incapable of finding words any more apt or better at describing the situation and the crucial importance of finding common ground and restoring civility than RFK himself....Bobby, though you were before my time, your words ring true for eternity...please enlighten us all once more...

(aside...the underlined portions of Kennedy's speech are so applicable today that they gave me chills simply re-reading them - and hearing them again on the you-tube clips of this speech...)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a time of shame and sorrow. It is not a day for politics. I have saved this one opportunity, my only event of today, to speak briefly to you about the mindless menace of violence in America which again stains our land and every one of our lives.

It is not the concern of any one race. The victims of the violence are black and white, rich and poor, young and old, famous and unknown. They are, most important of all, human beings whom other human beings loved and needed. No one - no matter where he lives or what he does - can be certain who will suffer from some senseless act of bloodshed. And yet it goes on and on and on in this country of ours.

Why? What has violence ever accomplished? What has it ever created? No martyr's cause has ever been stilled by an assassin's bullet.

No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders. A sniper is only a coward, not a hero; and an uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of reason.

Whenever any American's life is taken by another American unnecessarily - whether it is done in the name of the law or in the defiance of the law, by one man or a gang, in cold blood or in passion, in an attack of violence or in response to violence - whenever we tear at the fabric of the life which another man has painfully and clumsily woven for himself and his children, the whole nation is degraded.

"Among free men," said Abraham Lincoln, "there can be no successful appeal from the ballot to the bullet; and those who take such appeal are sure to lose their cause and pay the costs."

Yet we seemingly tolerate a rising level of violence that ignores our common humanity and our claims to civilization alike. We calmly accept newspaper reports of civilian slaughter in far-off lands. We glorify killing on movie and television screens and call it entertainment. We make it easy for men of all shades of sanity to acquire whatever weapons and ammunition they desire.

Too often we honor swagger and bluster and wielders of force; too often we excuse those who are willing to build their own lives on the shattered dreams of others. Some Americans who preach non-violence abroad fail to practice it here at home. Some who accuse others of inciting riots have by their own conduct invited them.

Some look for scapegoats, others look for conspiracies, but this much is clear: violence breeds violence, repression brings retaliation, and only a cleansing of our whole society can remove this sickness from our soul.

For there is another kind of violence, slower but just as deadly destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions; indifference and inaction and slow decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. This is the slow destruction of a child by hunger, and schools without books and homes without heat in the winter.

This is the breaking of a man's spirit by denying him the chance to stand as a father and as a man among other men. And this too afflicts us all.

I have not come here to propose a set of specific remedies nor is there a single set. For a broad and adequate outline we know what must be done. When you teach a man to hate and fear his brother, when you teach that he is a lesser man because of his color or his beliefs or the policies he pursues, when you teach that those who differ from you threaten your freedom or your job or your family, then you also learn to confront others not as fellow citizens but as enemies, to be met not with cooperation but with conquest; to be subjugated and mastered.

We learn, at the last, to look at our brothers as aliens, men with whom we share a city, but not a community; men bound to us in common dwelling, but not in common effort. We learn to share only a common fear, only a common desire to retreat from each other, only a common impulse to meet disagreement with force. For all this, there are no final answers.

Yet we know what we must do. It is to achieve true justice among our fellow citizens. The question is not what programs we should seek to enact. The question is whether we can find in our own midst and in our own hearts that leadership of humane purpose that will recognize the terrible truths of our existence.

We must admit the vanity of our false distinctions among men and learn to find our own advancement in the search for the advancement of others. We must admit in ourselves that our own children's future cannot be built on the misfortunes of others. We must recognize that this short life can neither be ennobled or enriched by hatred or revenge.

Our lives on this planet are too short and the work to be done too great to let this spirit flourish any longer in our land. Of course we cannot vanquish it with a program, nor with a resolution.

But we can perhaps remember, if only for a time, that those who live with us are our brothers, that they share with us the same short moment of life; that they seek, as do we, nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and in happiness, winning what satisfaction and fulfillment they can.

Surely, this bond of common faith, this bond of common goal, can begin to teach us something. Surely, we can learn, at least, to look at those around us as fellow men, and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us and to become in our own hearts brothers and countrymen once again.

56. I am trying to think back
to the Presidency of George W. Bush and if this sort of thing was going on during his Presidency. I cant remember the rhetoric being this dangerous towards a President who was very much a fascist and was dangerous to the United States Of America. It seems like we suffered for 8 years and while we were vocal at our displeasure and demonstrated against his policies in Iraq, I dont remember us calling Bush, Hitler and it being so much a part of the mainstream dialogue. I know some of us did call him Hitler but it wasn't plastered all over the news every night and left wing talking heads weren't saying it every day. This sort of thing proves that these hateful, unamerican, lost souls are truly amateur human beings and are thoroughly unamerican.

62. The people in the cult can't see the cult.
That's the problem. Not that the kind of people that vote for Republicans are overflowing with self-analysis anyway, but look at that they defended...

If Obama had rounded up a dozen of these protesters, slapped the "domestic terrorist" label on them, and had them sent to Syria for a month waterboardings and electroshock to the genitals, they'd immediately be calling him "Hitler" and demand his resignation.... and rightfully so. And we'd be with them on the streets.

But if Bush had done the exact same thing, we'd be alone on the streets, with the same conservatives counter-protesting and supporting Bush.

59. I admire Frank so much. I had classes based on his father's book
entitled "How Should We Then Live?" and later actually protested outside while Frank railed on the inside, and now he has seen the error of his ways, as I did of mine, and he is so very brave and unflinching in his writing and speaking of the truth. Frank is the embodiment of that which many say is impossible. He was wrong, now he is right, and he stands to say so.
Many admired Frank's previous work, and his father is a near deity in some circles, so he will not be unheard by all. To some, he will be an example of how we should live.

And he's a really good writer, all else aside.

66. This was the story of my life too...
In the 80s, when I was in high school, I was a "Get Right Wing with God" kind of person as well. A dedicated Republican, my hero was Ronald Reagan. And I viewed anyone who disagreed with me (and Reagan) was an advocate for Satan, including all Democrats. Fortunately, Reagan's downfall (Iran Contragate) made me realize that my positions were not drawing anyone to the Lord. Indeed, they were only angering others. So, I re-evaluated all of my positions, becoming a progressive Christian by the time I went to college. After seeing this video, I went to the King County Library webpage and reserved a copy of "Crazy for God," because I can comisserate with Schaeffer.

72. As a former Right Wing religous nut myself,
it felt like someone was reading right off my brain while listening to this.

Like many other recovering right wingers, many Bush and congressional Republican policies forced me to look in another direction, specifically Iraq, the Bankruptcy overhaul bill in '05, the bait and switch of running on moral issues in '04 just to turn around in '05 and try to privatize social security. This combined with education into the postgrad level finally opened my eyes, much like Plato's allegory of the cave....and it was very difficult and very painful over 2 to 3 years to make this intellectual transition. My own experience tells me that turning these people to see the light of intellectual reality on a large scale is going to be incredibly difficult if not impossible.

I was in this mindset back in the 90s under Clinton which Schaeffer states is occurring now. The ignorance, naivete, paranoia, religious validation of destructive and dangerous ideas and thoughts CANNOT be understated. I am afraid we are seeing Timothy McVeigh syndrome all over again but this time with a minority president and more mouthpieces on the right to push this implicit "call to arms", it could get much much worse.

I still have many family members and acquaintances that are in what I call the religious "mind lock" and the nature of their speech when they discuss politics is vitriolic and hateful, it's almost Jekyll and Hyde like. I seriously get spooked when they go off on these odd non-sequitor tangents using buzz words like socialism, facist, stalinist, etc...they have NO idea what they are talking about but are ready to "lock and load" to defend it. Telling them they are being played like political fiddles by the likes of FreedomWords, et. al, just sends them into a bigger frenzy.

As a former right winger, I have my share of an assualt rifle, a few handguns and have a lifetime concealed carry permit. The big irony is that I still carry concealed on a daily basis not so much as an insurance policy against the possible random felony against me but rather as an insurance policy of being caught in the middle of a wingnut break down in public where bullets start flying. That's how much my witnessing of right wing venom has changed my thoughts and behavior. Of course I would run and hide first but who knows when there might not be an escape. Yes, some of the paranoia still lingers, I know :|

74. Wow, he used my term "Go for Broke" in regards to the right wing.
I first used this in regards to Lindla Lingle using the budget shortfall as a political excuse to destroy the Unions and the Hawaii State Government, as it was clear that she is cleaning house before she loses the election next year.

The Republicans have no intention of winning any races in 2010. They know that their brand is finished for a hell of a long time to come. What they are doing is preying upon the weak, despondent, repressed, and emotionally sick people that need to belong to a group they identify with. The group doesn't need to stand for anything at all, but it has to fell "Like Home", and most likely, these people were raised in Racist, cruel, authoritarian households, subjected to all sort of pedagoguery to get them to compulsively comply with their Parents orders, God fearing, Compulsive belief in Authority, whether it be Parental, God, Government or Corporate authority.

After all, they are the leaders, and they are the flock.

All of this is described almost verbatim in Wilhelm Reich's "The Function of the Orgasm" in the chapter describing the Nazi rise to power. It is too close to what is occurring today to be ignored, and I recomend everyone read it.

81. What Schaeffer describes
is just the tip of this fascist iceberg -- the visible and vocal part. For every American who can be manipulated into attending and disrupting a public town hall meeting, thousands of others sit at home and are manipulated privately, and quietly.

I saw this rise of the fascist right coming almost 30 years ago, when Ronald Reagan was elected on a platform of bald-faced lies (e.g. "American workers can compete with anyone", etc) and blind patriotism, and our major media corporations, one by one, began being systematically converted from information agencies into propaganda agencies.

This conversion is complete, and what we're seeing now is its inevitable result: the implosion of our political and economic foundations, and an abysmally ignorant and brainwashed electorate who screams and rants about a $1 trillion health care reform, but who said virtually nothing about president Bush's $1.5 trillion extortion to his banking friends JUST TEN MONTHS AGO.

97. That's because these people do not understand......
the concept of introspection nor do they have logical thought processes. As someone said upthread, they have usually been brought up in an authoritarian household where they were not allowed to question anything. They also operate from a fear-based attitude towards all things. The combination of all these things makes for some serious mental disorders.

All of this should have been stopped right there!!

mandated by Florida State Supreme Court. GOP-sponsored-fascist rally --- No police interference!!!

And now here we are with plenty of GOP/NRA guns on the table . . . !!!
