July 30th, 2009 - Hundreds gathered at a Candlelight Vigil organized by the Iranian-American Youth in Washington DC's Freedom Plaza, to remember Neda Soltan and all those who died fighting for freedom in Iran. Special Guest Performance by Shamim, an Iranian singer.
For years, the people of Iran have struggled against a brutal government that has denied them their basic rights. In the pursuit of freedom, Iranians have made significant sacrifices. ONE of the MANY recent and tragic incidents of such sacrifice was the death of Neda Agha Soltan, who was shot and killed by security forces of the Islamic Republic on June 20, 2009.
In the Iranian tradition, those who have passed away are formally remembered on the fortieth day after their passing. As Thursday, July 30th was the fortieth day after Nedas death, hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor and remember Neda and ALL those who died fighting for freedom in Iran.
This event was organized by the Iranian-American Youth, an informal social network of concerned citizens dedicated to providing moral support for and drawing the world's attention to the struggles of the protesters, activists, and freedom-seekers in Iran. Their efforts transcend all political ideologies, organizations, and parties and our only message is that the will of the Iranian people must be respected.
