1. saw it earlier, so embarrassing for republicans
And yet I keep hoping they continue to stick their bigoted feet in their mouths.

I'm sure I wont be let down.

5. Olbermann needs to do a "worst persons" reel of these hearings...
...just little sound bites from Sessions, Graham, Coburn...watching them in compressed format would be truly frightening in light of the fact that these are "elected officials."

control their Freudian slips? Or do they do it on purpose as part of their racism campaign?

4. There was nothing Freudian about that -
he did it quite deliberately, and the appalling fact - overlooked - is that Desi Arnaz was Cuban. Sotomayor is American.

You know how all those people look the same?

7. I think that they are not very bright
and believe in the stereotype of the hot blooded Latina.

3. Can you believe this racist fuck?
Can you believe he even felt free to say something so horribly offensive?

This one seriously needs an attitude adjustment. Or did God tell him that he's perfect just the way he is?

What a total fucking embarrassment..................

6. Tom Coburn: The RIcky Ricardo of Oklahoma?
(The idiot probably doesn't even realize that that line was said by a Latino man to an ANGLO woman).

14. That may have been Ricky Ricardo spoke. But it's not how Desi Arnaz spoke.
Was Desi Arnaz a racist for portraying a Cuban Stereotype? I hope you all understand they are floating a lot of baited hooks. Y'all seem to be snapping them up.

15. OK, let me rephrase my post, then
(The idiot probably didn't realize that the line was said by an actor playing a Cuban Stereotype to an actress who was playing a Anglo Female Stereotype.) Happy now?

17. But if you remove all the stereotypes and racial reference. You have a man saying it to a woman.
Just like on I Love Lucy. Wrong for one is wrong for all in a court of law. Let the 777 break down the 111 for you. We're 1 Nation with 1 Law for 1 People. Now your on the hook. The Republicans are in the perfect position to say, I hope she doesn't contribute this racially charged atmosphere to the milieu of the Supreme Court. Get people thinking. Yeah she does kinda have a way of bringing about racial decisions that aren't very productive. Because as a judge she's willing to see the racial implication of statements by anyone BUT herself. Frankly when it comes to evaluating the job performance of a coworker as she was. Making Statements like that is something businesses get sued for. Just walk into any courtroom and tell any Judge. In my employment related commentary. I found that the life experience of the wise white male allowed him to make better business decisions than a Latina. Watch how quickly the Judge can say, I find you liable. The only real question is. Will the defense have the guts to say, But your honor, it's the Sotomayor precedent. Apparently it's not as much of a problem as your trying to make it out to be.

19. No, Desi Arnaz's accent was genuine.
Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 11:41 PM by Bette Noir
The racism consists of an Anglo making fun of the accent, not of the accent itself.

edited to add:

As Ricardo Montalban said to an interviewer, "Never make fun of someone's accent. It means he speaks more languages than you do."

20. The accent was genuine. But the diction and enunciations were exaggerated.
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 06:44 AM by Wizard777
The man was a singer and that plays a big part in singing. Singing is advanced speech therapy. These days it's also used in speech therapy. Country singer Mel Tillis used to stutter horribly when he spoke. But not when he sang. You use a different part of your brain to sing than you do to speak. So his speech therapist had him stop trying to say words and start singing them. Mel Tillis stopped stuttering. Now this technique is commonly used to help people overcome stuttering. I'm quite sure Desi had vocal coaches just like any other singer. Like diction and enunciation coaches. Tone and pitch coaches. Cadence coaches with their metronome. Tic toc. Most of the Heavy Metal vocalists used to go to an 80 year old woman they called "Granny Rock." She taught these macho men how to scream like a lil girl without hurting their vocal cords. Sure Desi had a Cuban accent. But only Ricky had the enunciation and diction problems. Desi was able to speak properly when he wasn't in character.

I guess we "lib-socialists" just have to get a sense of humor.

11. It's a knee-slapper, like Michael Steel attracting people of color with fried chicken.
Why do I have the feeling that the current über-racist trend in the GOP is only going to get worse before it gets better?

12. Would you please tell me again
what year this is?

During the campaign, I told my young (under 40) friends that they were about to see racism in guises so clever, it would take work to discern it as racism. But it would be racism.

They've learned. And they're all shocked that we are, indeed, a racist society.

But these relentless assholes aren't even sly about it - they're right out there with George Wallace and Strom Thurmond. They're not even trying to hide it.

Unbelievable.

We got a half-black President, and the racism is worse. Go figure......................

16. I saw that and said, "He did not just say that, did he?"
OMFG!

Imagine if a Democratic senator had said that about Estrada when he was nominated? It would have been non-stop coverage for days, followed by a senatorial reprimand, if not censure.

What's next? if Obama nominates an Asian woman for a judgeship, is Coburn going to say, "Me love you long time."!
