Summary: Cenk plays and breaks down a CNN clip of Huffington Post's Nico Pitney defending himself vs. MSM clowns over the accusation that his question at the Obama/Iran press conference was a plant. It's a really awkward and interesting segment, and Cenk's analysis is excellent. He gets into the difference between HuffPo and conventional media, and the questionable motivations of many in the MSM. He also gets into an *actual* White House plant, Jeff Gannon (and more).

15. I had no idea he asked so many transparently planted questions
Remind me again: how many questions did Milbunk and Smeggory raise about Gannon?

4. Just so's I understand
In the complete absense of your MSM what would Huffington's news source be ?

I ask because I thought they just re-reported news with their own slant and in the absense of a source what would they do - have their own world wide offices like CNN and BBC etc. ?

5. Why create an absurd hypothetical?
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 01:03 PM by ihavenobias
Be honest, did you watch the video or did you just read the headline and summary and then make some assumptions? Also, why bring in the BBC (which does a much better job than American news orgs like CNN, etc.) when they weren't part of the discussion.

9. Then why so defensive about the MSM?
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 01:10 PM by ihavenobias
They are the most watched with the most resources, so I don't see what defending them (in areas in which they clearly fail) accomplishes, unless you or someone you know has some personal stake in it. I'm not making an accusation, just a general statement.

Don't you think that Nico Pitney's question was excellent and possibly the hardest question asked at the press conference? Don't you think it's absurd that the jealous MSM (note also Chuck Todd's eye-roll over Pitney's question which wasn't shown in the OP) tried to create some BS controversy?

And speaking of sleep, it sure seemed like they all fell asleep during the lead-up to the war, not to mention so many other critical issues which sorely needed (and continue to need) more coverage and investigation. If anything you should be happy about sources like Huffington Post, they're finally creating some real competition to get the clowns in the MSM off their asses and that can only be a *good* thing.

I also responded to him and told him that Nico was doing stuff the MSM was not doing.
Just ignore him. Some people are unable to admit they're wrong.

18. The subject line
was The Huffington Post vs Mainstream News. I simply asked an associated question because I do not understand how Huffington can exist without the MSM . I wasn't defending your MSM . Mention of BBC whatever was solely in connection with their foreign news offices - nothing else.

After I last posted I went straight out and returned 20 minutes ago. Hardly surprising given my time zone but hence the delay in getting back to you. I had already watched the Youtube clip and have now watched it again.

Back to the original question - could Huffington exist without your MSM .....or does it rely on your MSM.

I'll just leave Sanity Claws to grow up.

Goodnight.

19. I reject your attempt to refocus and frame the discussion.
It's a complete red herring that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. It's an attempt at some kind of "gotcha"(!) question and I'm not biting since the answer is not only obvious, but completely and utterly irrelevant in the context and scope of this video and the issues it raises.

7. Apparently you didn't watch the tape
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 01:21 PM by Sanity Claws
Nico was called on because he was using Twitter to get inside information on what was going on in Iran. The WH wanted him to get a question from Iranians. The MSM didn't have reporters inside Iran to be in a better position to get that kind of stuff.

It is true that Huffington Post often reposts stuff from the MSM but here Huffington Post was apparently doing stuff that the old stodgy papers were not doing.

Edited to add link to Nico's archive of live blogging about Iran. I don't think anyone from the MSM was doing this.

What was the problem here? This President wanted to get a legitimate question from the Iranian people, the * Administration admitted to spending millions of dollars buying positive press. Where were these people's concerns then?

They are just throwing shit and hoping it sticks.

21. Thanks for the post. Cenk forgot about this.
Gannon was a perfect example of what the MSM was accusing. They suck because they're trying to make a stink over nothing but when it actually happened with Gannon, they didn't seem to care.

Remember Armstrong Williams? He was actually PAID to be a cheerleader ($240,000).
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-01-06-williams-whitehouse_x.htm
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A56330-2005Jan7.html

Remember when the Bush administration tried to use fake news stories to catapult their propaganda about Medicare and Social Security? The GAO called them out on it.
http://www.gao.gov/decisions/appro/302710.htm

Here's the relevant line in the GAO's report: "...we conclude that of the three parts of the VNRs, one part--the story packages with suggested scripts--violates the prohibition. In neither the story packages nor the lead‑in anchor scripts did HHS or CMS identify itself to the television viewing audience as the source of the news reports. Further, in each news report, the content was attributed to an individual purporting to be a reporter but actually hired by an HHS subcontractor."

I guess there was also a campaign against drug abuse that fell into this propaganda category.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A57881-2005Jan7.html

Let's throw in this one too. A reporter in Florida making money on the side and reporting on the Jeb Bush administration.

28. "Does the MSM fail to see
how ridiculous they seem with each passing day?"

They don't have to worry about it. It is accepted as reality by millions of nonthinking ruminant listeners. Faux News grows ever more outrageous by the day. Limbaugh can explain away any abuse by GOP politicians and his listeners eat it up. The MSM has no problem. The only answer is to counter their absurdities with reality based reporting.

26. As Cenk pointed out, the controversy wasn't about the question...
... because it was probably the toughest question asked at the press conference. The real controversy, as far as the MSM reporters are concerned, is that a blogger is sharing the same access to the president that they enjoy. That is all there is to the story. For the average citizen, it is a complete non-starter because the question was meritorious.

This controversy is a shot across the bow. The MSM is trying to make evident to the White House that they are the news makers, and they control the perception people have of Obama. Their message to Obama is clearly that if he is going to treat bloggers as journalists, they are going to make it hard on him. It is an attempt to kill internet media in it's infancy and put Obama in his place.

29. It's too late for them to kill internet media. Anyone w brains is aware of the controlled corporate
message that goes out and has found internet sources that they trust. There are still some good journalist associated w MSM but Dana Milbank is NOT one of them. Cenk is right it's not about the question content, Dana's jealousy was showing.

27. K&R! Fantastic!
This is a perfect illustration of Reich Wing hypocrisy. We all knew many questions to Bush were orchestrated to serve a propaganda purpose, that was painfully obvious. Now, this Reich Wing press doesn't get to further their aims so they squeal like a pig. I hope President Obama's next press conference further outrages the sensibilities of the Reich Wing smoke signal senders.
