out of nowhere, regardless of color or sometimes even gender.
Other times, I'm just instinctively holding it close to me because of the situation I'm in (walking in strange part of city alone, at night, whatever). No insult intended to anyone.
Sometimes I find myself worrying about precisely the problem that a man is going to look at me clutching my purse and take it as a personal insult to him. But I find that I really can't worry about that stuff too much, because what he has to and should realize is that women have been socialized to fear ALL strange men to some extent when traveling alone, especially in a city environment or one where they will be alone with the man.
In fact, one of the tactics real rapists (of all colors) will try to use to get women into a vulnerable position is to try to play on their wish not to appear unfriendly, standoffish or foolishly frightened. Read Gavin DeBecker if you want to know more. Women have been socialized to fear, yes--but they have also been socialized to be friendly. Men who would take advantage of them play on that. A man who wants to take advantage of a woman will first imply that she's being unfriendly and then that she's being bitchy just because she doesn't want to play along--hoping that she will soften up and give him an "in" because she doesn't wish to appear bitchy.
It's like this. You guys who are truly nice and decent may find that there are times when, if you're waiting for an elevator and a woman appears, and it arrives, she may let you get into the car alone and wait for the next one. Or if she's in there alone and you step in alone after her, she may step back and pull her purse closer.
If you're on the street at night and you come across a woman alone, she may switch to the other side. She may grab at her purse. She may walk faster.
Please try not to feel insulted by this. It's not because you're black (if you are). It's not because she thinks you, personally, are a serial killer. It's not because she's a bitch trying to insult you. It's for the simple fact that you are male, you are probably taller and stronger than she is, she is alone with you, and she doesn't know you.
And you will never know what it feels like to be her unless someday you wake up in a female body.
That's all.
Get over it.
