As the Wonk Room’s Matt Duss noted, “Were the U.S to clumsily wade into this Iranian political crisis, as McCain would have us do, it would support Ahmadinejad’s main arguments against his domestic opponents, and likely provide the perfect pretext for a more intense crackdown. In other words, the preferences of hardliners in Iran and the U.S. are pretty closely aligned here.”

1. Lugar is right on....
mcAncient, as we were well aware, would have us invade Iran so we can bring them a little democracy as well. What a buffoon.

This is THEIR business to deal with at the moment. Let THEM deal with it. Would WE want Russia or China or Canada sticking their nose into our domestic and political problems? I think not.

President Obama is right on this one, and so are those that express dismay, but we aren't going to over react either.

2. Hardliners exist not simply in opposition to each other,....
but have a symbiotic relationship. They justify each other's bellicosity. You can see it clearly with the real hardcase Likudniks in Israel, and Hamas. Ahmadinejad needs McCain and other neo-cons, and vice versa.

I certainly wouldn't vote for Lugar, but he's an alrightnik. The sort of genial Republican you wouldn't be surprised to see pop up on Rachel Maddow's show.
