By the way, there has never been a truer American than Benjamin Franklin. And he was one of the earliest supporters not only of libraries, but volunteer fire departments. At the time, I have heard, fires in homes were considered to be the wrath and punishment of God, so people were sometimes reluctant to help a person whose house was on fire. Franklin's invention of the lightening rod helped to change public opinion about housefires. Franklin also supported the formation of a volunteer fire department.

I believe that Franklin's library was a community organization like a benevolent society, not a government organization, at least in the beginning, but of course, we didn't have our government at the time he started his library.

Let's remember, Franklin was a genius, but he did not benefit from a lot of schooling, nevertheless, he lead the way toward education of African-Americans and -- I repeat, our libraries. For so little, we receive so much from our libraries.
