For over ten years Care2 has been connecting millions of people with opportunities to make a difference in their lives and the lives of those around them. We have partnered with over 400 nonprofit organizations to help advance their campaigns on causes from global warming to stopping the violence in Darfur. Many of these organizations work at the national or international level.
But, this Earth Month we’ve had the opportunity to work with a local organization that is working to save a special place near where many of the Care2 team live, work, and play: the San Francisco Bay. Save the Bay has been working to protect and restore the bay since 1961. And they’ve achieved some remarkable successes including helping establish 100,000 acres of healthy wetlands around the bay, and educating tens of thousands of students and adults about the bay.
This year Save the Bay is fighting to bring an end to single use bags in California - and with good reason. It is estimated that every year one million plastic bags end up in the bay! These bags damage habitat and can harm and kill wildlife that may swallow or become entangled in them.
Save the Bay is calling on Governor Schwarzenegger to fund the development of a Master Environmental Assessment, a critical first step towards enabling communities to develop ordinances banning or charging fees for single use bags.
One of the things we love most about Save the Bay is that they are always searching for new, creative ways to tell the story. Check out this amazing video they created for their campaign. I'm not sure how they did parts of it, but it's a great visualization of the problem: see video
As this so dramatically shows us, the impact of all this unnecessary plastic is terribly harmful. California could soon lead the country in moving beyond single use plastic bags and taking an important step towards a more sustainable, healthier environment.
In the battle of "The Bay vs. The Bag", I know who I want to see win!
