1. The FAA are really dumb for planning this.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=akIrJ9uez600&refer=home

It caused several buildings to evacuate.

From the article...

The 30-minute sortie, from about 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., was a “normally scheduled training mission” coordinated with the White House and New York office of the Federal Aviation Administration, Stein said.

NYC Police Surprised

New York police, told by the FAA not to disclose information about the flight, assumed it would be at a higher altitude, Paul Browne, the deputy police commissioner, said in an interview.

“They said it was flying over the Statue of Liberty,” Browne said. “We presumed it was going to be an elevation that would cause no concern.”

Eyewitnesses reported the plane was flying below the level of some office towers along the river.

13. They should have announced that "an" aircraft would be in the sky
for a photo shoot "sometime in the next few days" an hour or so before hand, on TV and radio, and that would have calmed people down.

22. It would have been a better idea..
to do this on a sunday morning as opposed to when the city was full of people.

Blaming Obama... Saying that this was insensitive to people feelings post 911 and that the WH should have known better before approving of the stunt. As if Obama himself were flying the plane... what idocy from the hate filled corner of politics.

2. Wouldn't you think that there are other military aircraft better
equipped for aerial photography than a 747?

36. So they say. The F-16 is no better for close in photo recon than a 747.
This was a classic cluster fuck.

37. Oh, sure, no doubt.
But I think some dipshit wanted one of those stupid pics for the "I LOVE ME" wall photo.

You know, when you leave the unit, all of your shipmates (fellow servicemembers at an other-than-DON command) sign the foolish thing on the matting, and it's framed and presented to you, like you're gonna stick that piece of crap on your wall, or something. I've got boxes of plaques and crap in my basement along those lines. Some people stick them in their offices, to let folks coming in know "where they've been." Like in the big scheme, it matters.

The best one going was the "Pentagon in the Rear View Mirror" picture. That's what it was--a photo of the Pentagon in the rear view mirror! It was done before the days of photoshop, I believe, because there's no way that you could get a full shot of the place in your car mirror, but it was quite well done--funny, too.

38. You know, it could be just that idiotic.
Like "Airman of the Month".

"Who hasn't been an AotM this year?"

"Me, Sarge!"

"Considered yourself honored." (Plop, certificate on desk)

Man, the AF has changed. Used to be it was as cunning and stealthy as an outhouse rat when it came to CYA and PR. Now it can't seem to keep both feet out of mouth and pants at full staff.

but when I was schlepping around in the blue suit Wake was the hole AF fuckups and embarrassments were dropped in, followed by Thule.

28. Minot's a goodie. It's not you--I think they go for "cheap" myself.
They like a civilian population that can handle minimum wage in some of these larger venues. Makes it more affordable to run their peripherals (exchange, commissary, MWR/MWA, etc.)!

31. Hahahahaha!
That doesn't explain the Bahamas, London, Naples Italy, assorted German installations, or Rota, Spain, though!

Of course, save London, which always had a slightly higher price tag than the others, when those installations first opened, the wage rates were dirt cheap--not so much anymore! The Euro has wreaked havoc on those overseas budgets.

26. I don't hear much fear here beyond a normal questioning of what they are doing.
Since there is so much fear associated with 9/11, and since we are not informed as to what is really going on with this flight and why exactly it is being done so suddenly with all the shock value, I think questioning and discussing is quite healthy.

"The White House apologized today for sending an Air Force One backup plane swooping over New York Harbor for a photo shoot that frightened Wall Street workers and evoked fears of another terrorist attack. "

lol , what's the problem? it is a shame one of those wall street fuckers didn't jump to make it a worth while exercise for the average American.

34. I think the WH is apologizing for something that they had no control over
to save face. This was an Air Force project. My tinfoil says that it is a message to Obama that he is not in control. Why in the world would Obama need footage of something like this? The Cheney goons are letting Obama know that if he doesn't back off of this torture investigation there will be another 9/11 just like the one they did before.
