1. When I was in the hospital I suffered from "ICU psychosis," brought on by sleep deprivation.
I had a bright light shining on me all the time and I was always being checked (this was after surgery). I started to hallucinate, a direct result of the sleep deprivation. I thought I was in a supermarket and the nurses at their stations were cashiers at their registers. I thought I was being trained to be a cashier. Then I hallucinated that I was on a train (I could "feel" the sway of the train) and I asked one of the nurses if I was on the train to New Haven. When I was moved to my room the next day I thought all of the furniture had been pushed up against the wall and I asked why the furniture had been rearranged. I couldn't recognize a friend who visited me...

If I had been interrogated at that time I probably would have told an interesting tale since I had no grasp of reality. While I'm relieved that I didn't see snakes, it is a bit disconcerting to think you are literally out of your mind, if only temporarily...

2. Rachel Maddow is arguably the most important commentator

working in national news today imo. Either that or Olberman.

There are others that I believe are just as prolific, but just haven't had their chance yet. But Rachel doesn't mess around. At all. Ever. I trust that she has done her homework when she speaks on an issue, which is unbelievably rare in today's market. Nor does she shy away from the tough issues. Quite the opposite in fact.

Great piece.

3. All one needs to do is read MacBeth to know the reasons why sleep is so important.
Even back then it was obvious how important sleep is necessary for "normal" human function.
