17. Because Jackson County Dem officeholders are Catholic Good Old Boys.
Stewart isn't but he is related to the Tabors who are essentially hereditary aristocrats and who always are elected/appointed to high office though they are Protestant. Roger is a banker too and the banking interests call the shots around here pretty much. All have to suck up to the antichoicers or the priests will instruct their parishioners not to vote for the Dems.

10. This is what I don't get about cultural conservatism
When has a civil society ever become MORE conservative over time? America used to be very racist, sexist and homophobic, but over time all of these prejudices have slowly worn away, just as they have in all other mature societies. Each time conservatives fight the change and each time they eventually lose. Don't any cultural conservatives own history books?

11. Very strong point. We will win out eventually and they know it.
I never had a good history teacher, even at the University level. I don't think it was me, I am pretty easy to get excited about learning. I blame it on the way teachers are required to transmit history in schools without all the conflict and controversy. I only found out much later how important and fascinating history is.

38. Because when something you truly value is under attack
you fight for it until all efforts have been exhausted. Otherwise it was never that important in the first place. I'm not taking the wing-nut side here, but it is important to understand the mindset of your opponent.

What if all of a sudden the country took a dangerous right turn and started going back to it's old racist, sexist, and homophobic ways? What if the Jim Crow laws were reenacted? Would you just shrug it off and say "Well you can't go back now."

13. TRUE OR FALSE: Jesus Christ mentions homosexuality in reference to the "sanctity of marriage"...
FALSE. There are only two things Christ mentions in reference to the "sanctity of marriage"- Adultery and Divorce -yet I'd love to know how many of these pseudo-Christian holy rollers opposed to gay marriage has committed adultery and divorce. Funny, they claim to be so concerned with the Christian perception of the sanctity of marriage yet they've never tried passing legislation preventing adultery or divorce.

19. A gay guy once tried to convince me Jesus was gay
His evidence was as strong as anything in "The Da Vinci Code," meaning not very strong. According to the Bible, there was a disciple "whom Jesus loved." And that disciple, John, would "lay his head on Jesus' breast." And John is often depicted as effeminate in old paintings (including Da Vinci's Last Supper, which led to speculation in "The Da Vinci Code" that it was meant to depict Mary Magdalene).

There seems little doubt that Jesus was the kind of Guy who would have embraced a homosexual disciple. What He would not have is a Republican disciple. The only recorded time He got angry was when He threw the Republicans out of the Temple. Jesus was patient and witty when confronting the Devil's temptations. But Republicans in the Temple? That made Him mad.

43. The full text of Mark, Ch.10 makes it clear that Jesus was gay
The part of the Gospel of Mark found in the New Testament isn't the full text; the Church fathers mutilated the text, cutting out the part where a naked young man keeps Jesus "company" for a night. They did it for obvious reasons. Clement of Alexandria pointed out this full text is now referred to as the "Secret Gospel of Mark".

Besides, Jesus spent all his time with a group of devoted fishermen. "Fisherman" at the time of Jesus was a stereotypical occupation for homosexuals, a slang term in essence, much like hairdresser or interior decorator would be a stereotypical gay occupation today.

27. Funny thing about Mike...
If he were in a room with DUers, we would think he's kind of a centrist. But a great guy to have on our side.

He comes from a family of Republicans and once told me that as a kid he heard about two parties: the Republican party and those Damned Democrats. Wonder what his family thinks now. :)

29. wow, so letting gays marry actually HELPS straight marriage - whodathunk!

I hope this gets distributed extensively - seems to me the guy has a point. It is like seeing another country become Democratic in the world and how it makes Americans appreciate their Democracy even more - for having had it so long and be able to cherish its value in a reflection of those who are just acquiring it.

32. At the very least, it's no threat to mine.
I'm actually expecting gay marraiges will put many straight marriages to shame in total divorce numbers. Wouldn't that be a fun twist, if it can be shown gay couples are more committed, and set better examples.

Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 06:51 PM by AlbertCat
Best argument ever!

Love is all well and good, but that's not why Gays should be able to marry. (God knows a lot of heteros don't marry for love!) It should happen because it's discrimination that is being wiped out. OK...let'em get all warm and gooey about love if that'll get things going, but it's really about bigotry, hatred (not love), and civil rights. (and money and property....which is really what marriage is all about)

That when a politician speaks a simple and plain truth we are all amazed.

It's sad but kudos to him. It takes guts to speak the truth.
