This is typical of the Democratic party. Not that I approve of the lockstep Republican idea, but it seems whenever the Democrats get into power you get these smaller splinter groups or even individual legislators that see it as there time to exert inordinate pressure on the process. One lesson we could learn from the Republicans is to run against these 'moderates' in the primaries and see if we can't get some people in there that are at least willing to work on the party agenda. Again I don't like lockstep but if you have to battle the conservative obstructionists in the Republican party and then fight the 'moderate' obstructionists in your own party nothing will ever get done which of course plays right into the hands of the conservatives who like the status quo to begin with. One thing Obama has is the bully pulpit of the presidency. If he can convince enough people that his programs are the way to go he can make it really difficult for these 'moderates' to stand in the way. President Obama has also to be willing to lose a few Senate seats to show these people that if they aren't willing to work with Obama he is willing to work against them. If you don't control these kinds of groups you end up like the Republicans with a strong, vociferous minority controlling everything your party does.
