8. I lived in Haight Ashbury back then and it wasn't just the hippies...
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 11:31 AM by L0oniX
it was also the Berkeley students and I am sure there were those in NY and other places as well. There were studies from there that were about depleted fossil fuel sources, global warming effects and pollution. I remember them saying that if we waited until the year 2000 it would be too late to fix it. Of course there were also protests against policy war and protests for freedom of speech on campus. The hippies were more anti establishment and it's ironic that to this day the social war is still the hippies vs the establishment IMO.

Oh yea and our soldiers are your friends and neighbors too!

God ...I still get mad thinking about those days.

11. About time they got a big thank you for the many things hippies ushered in,,,like
Recycling, bio-degradable, tie-dyes, sustainable yields,co-ops, pea-patches, communal living and communes, (some are still around and still working fine) organic foods, rock concerts and probably many others wonderful things that we all use as a matter of course now that I am not awake enough yet to think of.
I am sure with another cup of herbal tea I shall wake up enough to think of them just fine.;)
By the way, fyi, most of us old hippies that are still around took a bath every day and still do.

I was taken aback, I tell you, when I first got hugged by people I hardly knew. The culture shock was pretty extreme. In Il culture any bodily expression of affection is generally either considered sexual or just plain gauche.

You get used to it after awhile. I like to hug now.

105. I had to get used to it in France
I live in the South now, the South of France, you kiss people on the cheek to say hello here, and your buddies (I am a guy) kiss you hello once you are more than just the new dude hanging out. I also noticed that a thirty year old from San Fransisco (an american married to a French woman from Reunion Island, like my wife is, they are friends)whom I am not really that tight with hugged me hello when I arrived at his house in Paris to help him move to Lyon. He hugged me like I hug my best buddies from Illinois when they come visit me. My best friends still react akwardly, being from Illinois, but I thought it was cool that dude gave me a big hug, smiled and asked how the train ride was. I used to think I hated the USA, the more I go on I just think I hated Illinois.

I was born in Spring Valley, Ill and grew up in Streator, Illinios ... both are fairly close to Peoria.
I grew up with my hippie aunt that is now in her 70's and I have never seen her wear anything but blue-jeans.
She still lives her life as if it was the 60s.
I moved down here to Texas in 1975 - not much hugging going on down here.

22. Speaking of Herbal Tea
I'm giving up regular tea(I don't drink Coffee) after I watched the video 'Queen of the Elephants.'

It's It's a true story about an Indian Princess that became a Mahout and became a spokesperson for the wild elephants of India, that are being driven to extinction. One of the main losses of habitat are Tea plantations.

I'm going to Catnip Tea. The fresh dried leaves are best. My kitty will have some competition for the Catnip patch this year.

247. Just some suggestions to try for herbal teas...
It was easier to give up coffee after I discovered herbal teas...I like a nice apple Cinnamon tea in the morning to wake me up. Cinnamon is great for the sinuses as it is a natural expectorant and to head off colds. Apple is great for the tummy and digestion.
Later in the day I like a mild chamomile or peach tea and for a little pick up after supper I like a nice hot vanilla chi spice tea. It gets me going again until time to get to bed and then I like a nice cup of sleepytime...helps me sleep like a baby.
I like my teas with honey or if no honey is available I do use sugar. I prefer the raw sugar if I have to use sugar.
There are a lot of wild herbs that make a great sun tea too..like st johns wort (its also an antidepressant) or any of the mints.
Teas of blackberry leaves and strawberry leaves and rose hips help with cold weather as well..and colds.
Cleaver tea helps you lose weight as it speeds up the metabolism and be sure to use mellow or slippery elm with cleavers so you don't get a rough throat using Cleavers alone.
One needs to have a nice nettle tea in the early spring as it is a blood tonic that gets you running good for the planting time and of course..we sometimes need a dandelion tea to clean out our systems such as the urinary and blood cleaning systems and in case of water retention.
oops..ment to write a note and wrote a book ;) laters...enjoy your teas...

65. Let's not forget political protest taken to a whole new level
and the use of rock music in that protest. Woody Guthrie was the real inventor of the political protest song but John Lennon, Bob Dylan and many others truly made it a staple of the mainstream diet in the sixties and early seventies. Of course they were all borrowing from the Irish folk tradition but the hippy movement was what took it mainstream.

68. Hey, I've always gotten it.
And for the record, I think the problem my generation has with boomers is not what they did in the 60's, but what they did in the 80's and 90's. Seems to me that most of the hippies turned out to be wagon-jumpers who were dropping acid and protesting because it was the 'in' thing to do. They moved on to cocaine and disco, and then to corporate America.

Sure, there's a few of you out there who are still fighting the good fight, and I can't tell you how much I respect you for it. But there's also hundreds of thousands of you who abandoned your ideals for money. And they're the very cocksuckers who've fucked everything up.

I'm not trying to go all generation war on you though. Truth is most people are just greedy assholes, regardless of generation.

180. The flaw in your argument is this
*Most* of the generation of which you speak were never politically aware to start with. Most were never concerned about the environment. Most never protested the Vietnam War. Most were not concerned with civil rights.

Hippyness, or whatever you want to call it, was not even close to being the universal condition. Those with real convictions in the 1960s did not become these greedy sellouts you speak of.

214. Well, as someone upthread said,
Edited on Thu Mar-19-09 10:53 AM by Le Taz Hot
the percentage of boomers involved in 60's and 70's activism was probably fairly small -- my guess is about 10%. The rest of the boomers were doing what young adults always do; went to college, got a job, got married, had children, etc. They lived in the way they were taught to live and, in and of itself, there is nothing wrong with that lifestyle. However, there were those of us who would no longer be silent over the very real social injustices that had been going on for far too long without challenge and decided to be the change we espoused.

Just as there was a small percentage of boomers who were activists, there were also a small percentage of boomers that got into the disco/cocaine scene. Remember, it was covered ad nauseum by the media which way over-represented the number of people involved in that scene. I know I hated disco. I had a t-shirt that said so. Yes, our little group got into cocaine in moderate amounts and only for a time, but no one was living/dying for it. Most of us are and ever more shall be hopeless pot heads.

What happened in the 80's had far more to do with the fundamentalists being included in the Republican party (Reagan invited them -- he thought he needed them in order to get elected, and he did) and the Southern Strategy, which the Republicans had laid out in the late 60's. Add to that a hostage crisis for which Carter was blamed and it was the Perfect Storm. And we weren't in power in the 1980's yet. Most of us were only in our 30's, the strings were still being pulled by "the Greatest Generation," who, by the way, seemed to be perfectly happy with things like segregation and the draft.

The 90's brought Clinton with a LITTLE relief, but let's face it, Nixon was actually more liberal than triangulating Clinton and the DLC who proceeded to sell out all the Democratic ideals and gave us things like welfare "reform" and NAFTA. We hated him but we voted for him because he was better than the alternative.

All this is to say to blame all things that are wrong with this country SOLELY on the boomers demonstrates a mean spirit and considerable sophomoric, black/white thinking. And I am especially disheartened to see posts on DU stating, "I wish the Boomers would all just hurry up and die off. They caused all of this!" No, we didn't and we're going to be around for another 20-40 years so get used to it.

Meanwhile, the activists of the 60's are still active. Unfortunately, we're being included into the mix of

but where did all that backlash of the right wing come from? Your parents generation????? Damn the eighties sucked.......the nineties sucked, it sucks now.........I know it is mean but I cannot wait for your parents generation, the generation of my grandparents, to die off. Then the Republicans will have a hell of a time getting elected as they will lose their base. Same thing goes here in France. The old people tend to be greedy, hate filled, vindictive assholes who want to go after hash smokers, leftists and what not just out of spite because they did not have the freedom and the welfare state during their youth. Old people suck, including all three of my still living Republican voting grandparents.

Try getting to know some old people other than your Grandparents! I've been a live & let live liberal for 70 years now! I have been boxed in and NOT LET LIVE!
YOUR GEN peers really gave me a hard time when I returned to college at the age of 57.They a were shallow, selfish, insensitive, and DIDN"T LISTEN to what I was trying to say. If they had been able to hear me they might have become enlightened. I paid 13,000 for that year of hell, and still owe 8,500. in student loans......The art college was run like boot camp for young males who would be working ad agency deadlines, NO ROOM for any other approach. Perfect fit for the Greatest Gen old male President & Dean, Professor, young irresponsible, Boomer male, Yale Grad.,and Gen X students, like the girl who made the Deans list, not on her talent, with skull images in her work, but Daddy had bout ght her a computer of her own, the other 23 of us had to share only 56 computers available for our homework! ( My husband was drawing skulls in Jr. year high school back in 1955! One outgrows that!) At least I did learn computer software...totally obsolete now but one can spin off that with the basic knowlege.
How many of you are slaves to the offerings of Microsoft & Apple??? Planned incompatability?????? All you need is money to make them work together!

Until the age of 50. I had friends from all ages and in all walks of life, rich poor any color...............close friends many hugs.............WHAT HAPPENED TO CHANGE THAT?

I still go to local fruit and vegetable stands/stores. But diapers and the like come from the big box. Come to think of it, we still have a hardware store that is just a hardware store......ah Draguignan, France.......

My 19yr old son who hates Walmart as much as I, always says "The High cost of low prices Mum" whenever we have no choice but to shop at that store. Luckily, we don't have to very often and I support local as much as humanly possible. Meat is purchased in bulk from a local small butcher, we grow as much as we can in veggies but shop in a local FL grocery store called Publix - it's employee owned. We try all sorts of creative ways to buy local/recycle etc (freecycle is our friend too)!

it was about sharing, not about consuming, music, loving, and the planet - back then in San Francisco....But after about the end of January 1967 it was pretty much over.....(after the Human Being-In Golden Gate Park on Jan. 14, 67)...By then, the mainstream media had gotten a hold of it, it became bullshit, commercialized and distorted by the media and the first true "hippies" took off, left SF, many up north to Mendocino, Humboldt Counties and some to New Mexico....

How the media can lie & distort for greed should have been a lesson for all of us, but we were too busy caught up in the bullshit we thought was real and presented to us by people capitalizing on us.

As the selfish, lying, greedy hateful republicans corporate fascist ideology was then and is now!

And those who listened to the mainstream media bullshit back then, as the same who now listen & believe what the greedy hateful Limbaugh has been preaching the same republican bullshit for years.

Others only tried to teach their own kids and to end the negativity by becoming the change they want to see in the world by starting at home.
It takes us all coming together for this to work. We could be living in paradise instead of this worsening hell on earth. We must chose.
We can change the wold world if we will only change our minds about how things need to be done.

56. I think that was a horrendous mistake
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 02:22 PM by Two Americas
Around 1970, an idea swept through the counter-culture. Collective action was abandoned, politics were seen as obsolete and useless, and everyone was going to "find their personal truth" and focus on themselves and then do small things to make things better. The idea was to "change" people one at a time to new "value systems" - to "live" change somehow - and that this would magically transform social conditions.

That led directly to the nightmare we are now suffering.

I think we can safely say that this approach, this experiment, has failed catastrophically, and has merely served as a way to surrender the battlefield to the bigots and the right wingers.

In Detroit, while we had thousands of pro-Labor, Civil Rights and anti-war activists, I think as late as 1967 there were about 8 hippies in the city. That would be John Sinclair and friends, neighbors of mine at the time.

The 60's had little to do with sex, drugs and rock and roll and much to do with the fight for social justice and with political activism.

Suddenly after 1968 everyone turned into a hippy, and politics were out of fashion.

It was different on the coasts, I know.

35. Talk about killing the messengers
by labeling them dirty fucking hippies. People just taking this country in another direction, people who were awake, and people who could see through the illusion of institutionalization.

What happened to this movement, besides cointelpro infiltration? Multimedia changed the story, changed the perspective, and hid the enlightenment and these truths by mocking the drug culture and art culture, and distorted the messages. The 'soft' 70s resulted, watering down the fire of the previous generation, making way for the 80s--and the cycle of violence started all over again, as if the awakening had never happened!!

There is something to learn from this cycle of propaganda and manipulation, to admit that we can be manipulated, and be ever vigilant against it. Media has become a force that needs to be reigned in.

Sorry go go off on a tangent, but I was a witness to all of this, and seeing this video just hits that nerve. Dig it.

I notice you keep talking for all of us. Please don't. A lot of us remained just as active in the 70's, 80's and 90's as we are in the 2000's. I believe that the 60's uprising of civil rights and protests were diluted by "distractions" from the truth, such as cocaine and other egotistical drugs, movies, video games, television, and yes, now computers and technology.
It's like you know the problem is there, yet there seems to be so many other things to do that it takes a backseat to what has "become more pressing" in daily life. We are kept so busy by capitalism that we can't even see that we are being deceived by it....

I got it before you were born, pal. Next time I won't attempt a joke.

I never sold out, and I have paid a huge price for "committing truth". I have raised kids who have the flick better than many DUers about corporate America and questionable politicians. They could out-hippie the old hippies for real people values. I just don't really see a lot that has been accomplished over the years, and I don't see much hope for the future, although I did on November 5th. I've seen it before and, believe me, the honeymoon is over. I am a native Chicagoan and back here again. You said somewhere that you are a Chicagoan. Obama is a Daley guy, a Stroger guy, a MACHINE guy. I didn't think so before, but I see who he has surrounded himself with, and I think we have been sold a bill of goods. I am sorry, but it is the truth. I wish I were wrong.

We gained the know-how to raise, grow, and build things we wouldn't otherwise have. And it looks like we may well need those skills again real soon.

One more thing, for all the talk about the youth vote electing Obama - and it was amazing how many of these wonderful kids worked their butts off - there were many, many "old hippies" up in New Hampshire knocking on doors and making calls. I'm truly sick of the dissing my generation has gotten from both sides of the age divide. Our generation got soul. Say it loud. Say it proud.

100. why why why oh why was I born in 1979
and not 1949??? so many Gen Xers were just nihlists and depressed. I wonder I would have tried to off myself if I were a part of the hippie generation like I did being part of gen X. In Gen x it was like we were all convinced something was wrong with US for rejecting greed and violence......our natural allies, the hippies, we were told were just dumb ass dreamers and the only way was the corporate way, enter the nihlism, hence the popularity of bands like Nine Inch Nails, Ministry....Once you see that revolt and trying to get real change gets you JFK, RFK and MLK killed what else can you hope for? I am so glad that I am out here in a country town, I am from the city, a long way from the city, and that is just where I want to be right now.....

you hippies gotta know this movie

"where you from man"

"its hard to say"

"hard to say"

"it's a real long word"

"I just wanna know where youre from man"

"a city"

"a city? what city?"

"it doesnt matter, all cities are alike....."

the movie that, in 1969, showed that "dropping out" doing the big deal and retiring was not a road to freedom, it was a road to dispair, "we blew it man" the movie that said how can you drop out and retire when the world is so fucked up

I will let one of you older folks tell others the name of this excellent underground low budget classic.

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour<1>, became one of the most influential and controversial American TV programs of the Vietnam War era, due to being very politically left. Despite popular success, the brothers' penchant for material that was critical of the political mainstream (and sympathetic to the emerging counterculture) led to their program's cancellation by the CBS network in 1969.

This needs to go world record viral - raw unfiltered truth in a nutshell set to a beat.

Money, money, money (hey even ABBA had it right) - bought off legislators, Rush and Hannity booming out over countless megawatt corporate owned channels while progressive talkers are hard to find.

It's not just republican either - this new "moderate" group of Democrats looking the stymie meaningful health care reform disgust me - but again, I'm sure it's money talking.

118. We knew it was important to be dreamholders
But none of us expected it would take this long for people to start waking up so we could give the dream back.

The hippie movement was one of humanity's early imaginal cells. Once those cells start to appear mysteriously in a caterpillar's body, it doesn't matter how hard the caterpillar's immune system tries to fight them off. They just keep appearing until eventually there are enough of them to trigger the change, and the caterpillar goes through a double transformation -- first dissolving into goo, then re-manifesting as a butterfly. Everyone who cares, everyone who wakes up, everyone who realizes this has to change and then works for that change is an imaginal cell in the body of humanity. That, not just its ephemeral beauty, is the reason the butterfly is the archetype of the Age of Acquarius.

I could barely make myself watch the whole thing. The pain and rage against the right can often get so overwhelming for me...and to think that there was once a time, a time before my time (also b. 1979 here), when the people still stood a chance against the imperialism, just fills me with grief. I cannot allow myself to believe that the machine really has won. It has to turn around again sometime...this cannot go on forever...

Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 06:55 PM by Serial Mom
There are a few of my former hippie friends who fell into the greed is good (even tho' they remained true to the religion where I met most of them - like they aren't hypocrites!:sarcasm:) and did nothing but follow the money and unethical business practices to become rich, outspoken 'pukes!

BTW, this was great! I thought the words, the music and the images fit so well together - for some reason, it made me truly remember back to about 1971, a house I lived in then, my life, my husband/kids and what I was feeling then! Thanks!

127. Yup.
I was at university in the late 60's when 'the man's CIA' was banned on campus and
the National Guard lined the streets. We were right, but we dropped the ball and
took the cash. Today, our younger brethern have not even taken up the cause, they are
so busy trying to make the man hire them and love them. Boy, are they in for a shock
when they turn 40.

Yes, we were totally right, and got ridiculed, shot and jailed for our convictions---glad
I had some, unlike the kids today who have none.

RIP America.

This one got the tears welling up. John Lennon WAS god. At least to my friends and I. I remember when he died we all took the train into NYC to attend the memorial for him at Strawberry Fields. Such a sad day for many.

http://www.bobs.com/Lyrics.cgi?First_I_Was_A_Hippie_Then_I_Was_A_Stockbroker_Now_I_Am_A_Hippie_Again

Artist: The Bobs
Song: (First I Was A Hippie, Then I Was A Stockbroker)
Now I Am A Hippie Again
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(c) 1987 Gunnar Madsen and Richard Greene, Best of Breed Music (ASCAP)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First I was a hippie
Then I was a stockbroker
Now I am a hippie again

In the Summer of Love I was mellow and high
I had my bus and my dog
and everything I needed to get by
But the years rolled on and I settled down
I parked my bus and took a car pool into town

A stockbroker in a three piece suit
I gave up sellin' hash and started doin' toot
I had more money than I'd ever dreamed of
I forgot all about the Summer of Love

First I was a hippie
Then I was a stockbroker
Now I am a hippie again

The years went by faster and faster
Down on Wall Street they called me the master
I soon had more money than Lady Astor
I couldn't see an impending disaster

But I wasn't happy
I broke out in a rash
I just couldn't handle the stress...
And then came the crash

First I was a hippie
Then I was a stockbroker
Now I am a hippie again

I'm free -- I lost all I had and that's ok with me
I'm free -- I think I'll check the oil in my van
I'm free -- I've got tickets for all five nights
of the Grateful Dead
I'm free -- hey, see my new macrame briefcase
I'm free -- etc...

-----------

From 1987, Everything old really is new again.

203. When we're called Hippies we're loved, when we're called Boomers we're resented and
labeled greedy, selfish, "Dirty Fucking Boomers".

You've introduced a new take on things.

I believe what Hippies got right was recognizing "the system" as the problem. Not so much singling out individuals or particular groups but rather how the chaos was the result of something bigger, it was within the design, integral to the system - the system fed on chaos and destruction and would have become all consuming if left to it's own devices.

Seems the system may have learned the valuable lessons of divert, divide and conquer.

206. Yes we were, so many years ago. And we still are, though most are still not listening.
The enemy is much stronger, more ruthless, more dangerous, and less humane than the foe we faced back in the day.

We have to keep fighting, each in our own way.

225. You want names, I'll give you my "enemies list." Rethugs, first and foremost. Their
philosophy of might (which they have) makes right has directly led to most of the problems. Their sick value system that places financial "success" as the only worthwhile goal has so warped our society that the only solution is a complete excision, by any means necessary.

The oligarchy that has ruled America since the beginning of (our) time has created a system that, simply put, works for them and them alone.

I also blame the stupid and ignorant among "we the people" who allow our prejudices and bigotry and pettiness to overrule any rational sense. Want to worship an imaginary sky being, fine. Just don't try and force me to.

In the final analysis, it really is the entire "system" as we used to say. The corporate elite and their media mouthpieces and their governmental minions are all part of the "enemy within" that, if this country is to survive, need to be taken down and replaced by a system that truly is "of the people, by the people, and for the people."

To be even more specific - the system cannot be attacked. It is a construct. The individual people who make up the institutions of control should be the targets. In a war, you do not attack a country. You attack the people who fight for that country. The same should apply in this war.

211. Very well said, and true.
Now go out and leave (biodegradable) flyers everywhere (libs, laundros, phone booths, etc.)

(sorry if English is not my natural language)

... we as a nation still wage wars of choice.
Wars encouraged by PLUTOCRATS who never have to fight them.
PEACE IS NEVER DISCUSSED (even if Dennis Kucinich - and others - bring peace up in discussions, only to be ridiculed, even by many on the left).
...
Peace is no pejorative: PEACE IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SURVIVAL OF THE HUMAN RACE. (AND SO IS TRUE, CAREFUL AND THOUGHTFUL WEALTH SHARING POLICIES)

And those who advocate for war are a dangerous and fearful group, who should be marginalized and disavowed.

Now the oceans have been rising (and ACIDIFYING).
The polar ice is melting at alarming rates.
The climate is changing in irreversible ways.
Our survival as a species on this planet is on a precipice.
The science on this is clear: humans are now in trouble because of our reckless
We have polluted this fragile jewel in space.
Our only home.
The food we buy is contaminated.
The toys we give to our children as presents at Christmas are ...

WE HAVE NOW COME FACE TO FACE WITH OUR OWN EXTINCTION

wall street SHOULD HAVE BEEN ... LONG AGO...

I'm proud of us all, who were part of it, we did good. No other generation of mere kids stood up to the "powers that be" like we did. I doubt that any will again either.

And we were right. About all of it. (Isn't that amazing - and with no multi-million-dollar-salaried pseudo-super-skilled-experts to tell us so - just humanity, common sense, and lack of the gene to knuckle under to fake demi-gods?)

244. Re: QC
Whoever QC is, QC has taken my video, DFH and ripped it with Firefox or some other technology and has placed it on his own YouTube channel calling it his/her own. Getting hits when they should rightfully be coming to me. Now, to be clear... I made this video to share with everyone. But within the confines of embedding and sending links my way, where they belong........... at joeyess' YouTube channel.

This is wrong on so many levels. Now I'm being ignored by QC and repeated requests (polite ones, I might add) have been scrubbed from his channel and comments section. Sorry QC, you're a fraud and a rip-off.

You should feel shame, but alas, the convictions that you purport to hold are simply nothing but jello.

See for yourselves DUers.

Here's the links. Mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKEZoY-TMG4 QC's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47PL6oq_X_k&feature=related

Nice, huh?

If someone can rein this in I would appreciate it.

Thanks everyone here for viewing my work. I got over 11,000 hits from here alone and would like to return with more of my work, but if this is what folks will do here, I will have to re-think the wisdom of coming here. QC thought he/she could troll for some views on my work. It's a little like plagiarism, isn't it?
