1. I think the second speaker said it best...
... The Military Industrial Complex, Oil, and furthering the Conservative political agenda.

I'd feel safer if we killed the Taliban but I'm still a Christian which is why I find it very ironic that most proponents for war call themselves "Christian" even though Christ said things like "Love your enemy", "Bless them that curse you", "Do GOOD to them that hate you", "TURN THE OTHER CHEEK", "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God"...

3. The religious right ignores Jesus's actual teachings.
They focus on John 3:16 and forget that "belief" translates into behavior. The preachers just tell people they are saved from Hell if they say a simple prayer and move on with their normal lives.

4. Maybe they should call themselves "Johnist" instead of Christian :-)

John 3:16 is a good verse and all but people also seem to forget that Christ's words are Christ's words and everyone else's words are everyone else's (even if they're in the bible) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." was JOHN'S interpretation of the conversation where Jesus tells Nicodemus how the only way to see the Kingdom of God is to be "born again". Funny how right-wing evangelicals will cling to anyone's words in the bible before Christ's (actually it's more tragic than funny).

5. Good point. I hadn't thought of it that way.
Welcome to DU!:hi: from an apostate that read the whole bible (Catholic version with apocrypha) from beginning to end, including all the footnotes. I learned a good deal of Hebrew and Greek from that version. My favorite apocryphal book was Judith. 2nd favorite was Macabees. Among the canonical books my favorite was Eclesiastes. I found the New Testament to be way too boring.

7. Thank You!
That's impressive. Hebrew and Greek? I've always wondered would it would be like reading scripture in a more "accurate" language especially since the KJV misinterprets some of the originally intended words due to the translators of that time.

8. The Catholic bible is a translation, just like KJV.
The footnotes and prologues are where you can find info about the etymology and history of the scriptures. For example, you ever notice how alot of Jewish names end in "el"? That's because "el" means "God" in Hebrew. The prefix has some other meaning such as "friend of" or "child of" or "follower of" etc. Christ is Greek for "annointed one," as with oil. I learned a bunch of stuff from the Catholic Bible. I read it as an academic endeavor while I was locked up.

9. Nice.
I'll have to check that out. Workout and read; that's I hear all there really is to do inside :-) I had to spend 10 days in "tent city"-nothing to serious -for a DUI a few years ago and I started and almost finished Dicken's Great Expectations.

2. Because that is where the
Pipeline goes through. If you have an hour and a half this video here talks about this subject. It's about PNAC, Iraq, WTC, and their crimes against America and our illegal wars.

6. Interesting excerpt from the Congressional Record
of an address to a Congressional Committee by John J. Maresca, a VP of Unocal Corporation, on February 12, 1998.

U.S. INTERESTS IN THE CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS

HEARING

BEFORE THE

SUBCOMMITTEE ON
ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

OF THE

COMMITTEE ON
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

ONE HUNDRED FIFTH CONGRESS

SECOND SESSION

FEBRUARY 12, 1998

SNIP

The key question then is how the energy resources of Central Asia can be made available to nearby Asian markets. There are two possible solutions, with several variations. One option is to go east across China, but this would mean constructing a pipeline of more than 3,000 kilometers just to reach Central China. In addition, there would have to be a 2,000-kilometer connection to reach the main population centers along the coast. The question then is what will be the cost of transporting oil through this pipeline, and what would be the netback which the producers would receive.

For those who are not familiar with the terminology, the netback is the price which the producer receives for his oil or gas at the wellhead after all the transportation costs have been deducted. So it's the price he receives for the oil he produces at the wellhead.

The second option is to build a pipeline south from Central Asia to the Indian Ocean. One obvious route south would cross Iran, but this is foreclosed for American companies because of U.S. sanctions legislation. The only other possible route is across Afghanistan, which has of course its own unique challenges. The country has been involved in bitter warfare for almost two decades, and is still divided by civil war. From the outset, we have made it clear that construction of the pipeline we have proposed across Afghanistan could not begin until a recognized government is in place that has the confidence of governments, lenders, and our company. (emphasis added /JC)

Mr. Chairman, as you know, we have worked very closely with the University of Nebraska at Omaha in developing a training program for Afghanistan which will be open to both men and women, and which will operate in both parts of the country, the north and south.

Unocal foresees a pipeline which would become part of a regional system that will gather oil from existing pipeline infrastructure in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. The 1,040-mile long oil pipeline would extend south through Afghanistan to an export terminal that would be constructed on the Pakistan coast. This 42-inch diameter pipeline will have a shipping capacity of one million barrels of oil per day. The estimated cost of the project, which is similar in scope to the trans-Alaska pipeline, is about $2.5 billion.
