WOW! If this gentleman, Frank Schaefer is for real what an absolute gem. I am adamant that separation of church and state is a requirement for the success of a democratic nation. This gentleman is extremely well versed and his description of the current strain of Evangelicals is painfully truthful yet needed for the majority of the population to understand their allegiance is not to God but to the GOP.

When he speaks about the popularity of Ann Coulter and Limbaugh, I totally agree, for them it is about cheer leading the rabid among them while laughing all the way to the bank. He has me curious now, so I will have to read his book.

The 20 million who lend an ear to Rush are only 6.7% of the American population, and a large percentage of those tune in not because they agree with him, but because they do not. Every good talk radio personality knows that using inflamed rhetoric increases their listening audience not due to those who agree with them, but because people who can't stand them tune in to monitor them.

I think the O-team has it exactly right. Drive listeners to Rush so that independents hear first-hand how utterly inept, foolish and under-educated many republican are. If you get a minute, jump over to Lucianne.com and read some of the messages. The language used, the lack of critical thinking skills, and the naivete expressed is a real eye-opener. And yes, these people actually vote. However, their votes are not based on candidates qualifications, rather on how well candidates pander to this constituency's elementary religious beliefs and their racist fears. And oh do they love their Rush. It's funny really, the way he is able to play them. Heck, he's making millions off of their ignorance and hatred and laughing at them all the way to the bank. Heck, they're paying for his Viagra, of course he's happy.

...all listeners necessarily agree with the chicken hawk doper. I listen to rush sometimes and I certainly don't agree with the asshole. The fact is, if you're a political junkie like me, you want to hear political talk no matter which side is doing the 'color commentary' and in my case and in the case of many others, there is just no choice. In my radio 'market' (Detroit area) you can listen to 1310 am progressive talk to hear our side of the story, but only as long as the signal comes through and then you're done and have to switch to 760am and the right wing whacks. ( I call them regularly and tell them I'm boycotting their sponsors) The progressive station, which carries Air America and other progressive stuff is out on the weakest signal imaginable while the other one is "the great voice of the great lakes" and can be heard for hundreds of miles around. So, of limpy and hannity's 13-14 million listeners, some are certainly people like me who wouldn't help them out if they were dying in the streets...

However I disagree with his view that the GOP is made up only of reactionary white people. They are the base but the GOP is truly run by and for plutocratic corporate interests who just use reactionary white people to get their agenda passed. Gay bashing, immigrant bashing and controlling women's lives will always take a back seat to destroying the new deal and progressive taxes.

Also even though about 25% of the country is made up of neofascist idealogues, it is the other 25% who don't know or care about that fact and still vote GOP that is also to blame. Luckily that 25% of non-fascist republicans have been abandoning the GOP lately, but they have still largely stuck by the party.

This is a man who was not just in the righty trenches, he helped to dig them. His father was the author of the books that were the basis of much of the right to life movement, and other 'christian' political enterprises.
For several years now, he has been speaking out. He has been writing wonderful and truthful pieces. I have gained great respect for him, where once I would have counted him as a key leader of the enemies of my house.
Frank has found redemption, and for that I am glad.
