1. Ha ha ha - who pay people dollar a day and poison rivers and air to make big profit?
Ha ha ha that China.

Who censor internet and make people disappear in middle of night? Who use sham accounting in state-run banks to hide half-trillion dollars of bad business debt? Who stole Tibet and threatens Taiwan? Who harvest organs from prisoners executed without fair trials and sell them to rich foreigners? Who number one in capital punishment? Who block international action against Sudanese genocide to protect oil and resource interests? Who secretly help Kim stay in power in North Korea for cynical political reasons, even though people are literally starving there?

Ha ha ha that China.

10. I think China 'ha ha'ed' a bit too soon
and I think they are in deep shit for their wrongdoings. They say this has gone back 20 years that they've been making money at the expense of life and health of others. I think China 'laugh too soon...'

4. America not doing those things.

Individuals within the United States are doing those things. And those individuals are making a lot of money for themselves in the process.

Let's face it, IBM did not donate ten thousand AS/400 computers to Chinese universities last year because Americans don't want to be IBM programmers. They did it to generate a new crop of cheap programmers to replace the expensive programmers here for the purpose of enriching the wealthy individuals who own IBM (and whose individual citizenship is immaterial).

America has nothing to do with it.

9. Psssst . . . the film is made by an American.
Edited on Mon May-07-07 08:23 PM by HughBeaumont
What's with all of the responses on this board that think this was made by freepers, Chinese, or whoever? This was a short at the Sundance film festival and it's correct in it's message. Running at a total of 17 minutes, the film's intent is not at ALL to goof on America the Nation or praise the greatness of China. It's a middle finger to the neo-clown free market economists and robber barons and their shit policies that give mountains of blue and white collar jobs to a nation that has one of the worst human, environmental, business and employee rights abuse records in the world. Just like Harding and Reagan before him, Bewsh places old-boy cronies, CEOs and board members in his cabinet and hands the kingdom keys to the wealthy, Big Business and the military at the expense of nearly every existing social program and at the behest of American taxpayers. The offshore-a-thon has been commencing since the 70s and these same corrupt old boys and corrupt Chinese industrialists make out hand over fist . . . while the US and Chinese workers merely get the fist.

And while we ARE starting to say NO to the Republican assholes, it really doesn't matter as politicians from both sides (save Dennis Kucinich and Byron Dorgan) champion this destructive brand of unbridled corporatism and the thousands upon thousands of displaced workers it leaves in its wake, rehashing the old "you just have to adapt" and "the consumer wins with the low prices" canards. You cannot rebuild a sagging economy depleted of good paying manufacturing and industrial jobs with lower-paying service jobs. But hey, SOMEone has to buy the Larry Elisons another yacht and the Sumner Redstones another mansion. Might as well be my cousins and their oh-so-exorbitant Delphi wages, which they were recently bought out of.

11. The facts hurt
I think it is so very sad that we see this knee-jerk reaction on DU. As far as I can see nobody is praising China, it does highlight the short-sighted stupidity in our policies.

Point all the fingers you want, rant and rave and proclaim "everyone's out of step but my Johnny" all you like but the one question we must ask ourselves is this:

What one country could bring us to our knees and completely alter our lives without firing a shot?

The answer is: China.

So turn a blind eye all you like DUers! Yes, by all means focus on the faults of China. And when you pull your heads our of your asses you will be looking your new Chinese overlords in the eye.

Julie

12. No one is turning a blind eye

except those who think China doesn't have serious liabilities. This video was sneering, condescending, and omitted all the inconvenient facts. I suppose it would be pleasing to someone who blindly loves China and despises America, regardless of inconvenient facts. I don't think there are many on DU who fit that description.

As for China "bringing the US to its knees," the same effect would obtain on China as well, should China suddenly be shut out of the US export market. Their economy would literally collapse. The Chinese carry an extraordinary amount of bad business loans in their banks, loans that are no longer performing. I.e., they're not being paid, and they are never going to be paid. The government keeps kicking this can down the road, hoping that economic growth will balm the situation. If the loans were in Western banks, they'd have been called and written down long ago.

Much of the modern Chinese expansion has come from tacit state support of enterprises that literally can not pay their bills. Another considerable chunk has come from artificial state manipulation of the Chinese currency's value relative to its actual market value. It's a text-book example of a short-term gain now for long-term pain later.

Someday, sooner than most realize, there will be a day of reckoning, and when it happens, the China bubble is going to pop. Because China has little or no Western-style social safety net in place, it will be very, very ugly.

I am not worried about Chinese overlords anytime soon. I'm considerably more worried about the domestic variety.
