Ben Nelson Shoots Back At Paul Krugman, Nonsensically (VIDEO)
Jason Linkins
February 9, 2009 04:59 PM

Earlier today, on MSNBC, Norah O'Donnell gave Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson a chance to respond to the criticism of economist/New York Times contributor Paul Krugman, who laced into the Democrat and his Republican allies this morning for lessening the effectiveness of the stimulus package with the cuts. Now, when I say, "Nelson responded to Krugman," I should be clear. This was not a response on the merits, but rather, a response of word-like utterances blown through Nelson's cake-hole, in the same way that desperate whales attempt to attract mates. You see, Krugman today accused Nelson and his "centrist" Senate colleagues of "extract a pound of flesh -- not, as far as anyone can tell, based on any coherent economic argument, but simply to demonstrate their centrist mojo."

Nelson responded:

"Well, y'know, I don't know where he's from, but I'll tell you, in Nebraska, $60 billion for education on top of $40 billion, that's a hundred billion. That's a pretty big commitment to education nationwide."

And that's not a coherent response in terms of economics! That's a fancy way of saying: "I think Nebraskans can add six and four, and are easily impressed by big numbers."

Nelson added, "And this is on top of what the states are able to do," apparently unaware that "what the states are able to do" isn't that much in these current economic conditions. And that is one of the things the stimulus bill was supposed to address, but will do less effectively now that Nelson has cut $25 billion dollars from the bill that was supposed to help the states to do those things. Nelson went on to suggest that governors could add as much money as they wanted to education out of a special fund, which is a fancy way of saying that the governors could rob Peter to pay Paul. Anyway, none of what Nelson said came even close to addressing Krugman's criticism.

Meanwhile, Ezra Klein says that Norah O'Donnell "could have said, 'But Senator, Krugman's argument isn't about the preferences of Nebraskans but the size of the output gap in the next few years and the number of people were going to need to put back to work. He says the stimulus is too small as compared to a recession that the Congressional Budget Office estimates will shave 14 percent off our output. Which part of his analysis do you disagree with?'"

He's right! Though it's difficult to imagine O'Donnell ever asking something about "output gaps." I mean, she's just a cable news anchor!

1. Mr. Ben Nelson doesn't sound like a Democrat to me
corruption is corruption... this man represents it. He gave average Americans the middle finder along with the whole GOP. It's not wrong when you know you are screwing those over, whom you claim to help, it's deliberate.

3. The "anti-intellectual bias" doesn't only exist with the Rethugs ...
We have some of our own who are almost PROUD of their
ignorance.

Have you heard of the NOBEL PRIZE, Sen. Nelson?????
Or is that honor too "elitist" to be accorded ANY
respect by your and your short-sighted constituents?

6. Population Nebraska: 1,700,000
:dunce: I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it.

8. John Stuart Mill - far too far ahead of his time, sadly.
Or maybe he's timeless.

9. O'Donnell would be reprimanded, demoted and fired, if she DARED to respond to Bushiganda
by asking a seriou probing question that might inform people.

VERBOTEN.

Within a week, probably the VERY NEXT DAY, O'Donnell would be called into her Supevisors office. One, perhaops two people from Corporate would be there.

She would get chewed out and I mean CHEWED OUT! It would be explained to her that such irrelevant and overly wonky questions were unacceptable, as was badgerinbg a Senator.

It would be made VERY CLEAR to her that, if she wanted to keep her job, all the free dresses and makeup, the company care, and that fat salary (not to mention the fame that most Americans crave at bottom) UNLESS she stopped doing her job poorly by asking questions like that.

It's almost funny. The Second Coming of the Nazis, and they broke the American Free Press like it was a swizzle stick.

How did they do it? Did they have to threaten journalists familiies or stand behind them with a gun pointed at their head?

No, the mighty American Free Press, and through it, the American Republic, died (unless Obama can do the impossible, which maybe he will - YES WE CAN!) from the threat of a bad performance review!

Maybe the Bushies will put it over the gate at their Auschwitz in 50 years (but there will be NO industrialized slaughter, that would be bad marketing and rebranding strategy):

Arebit Macht a Good Performance Review.
