1. Right on.
The noting of the Israeli targeting of civilians and the hijacking of aid boats really hit home. Chomsky says that the targeting and deliberate ramming of the aid boat Dignity was worse than piracy in Somalia.

And then there are the Israeli secret prisons and use of torture, reported in Israel and Europe but rarely mentioned in the USA.

So so sad.

5. Why do the
Jews(and non-Jews) in the US support this kind of atrocity? What is the core reason?

6. I don't get it either.
Religious beliefs, from Jewish extremists to Christian fundies are defying rationality.

8. I believe that it is because
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 05:05 PM by drmeow
many of them have bought the prevailing propaganda. When my family came back from living in Lebanon in 1976, you NEVER EVER heard the Palestinian side of the story. It has only been in the last 10 years that even a remote amount of balance has entered into the US discourse about Israel and even then it has continued to be tremendously slanted. My sister did a great deal of research in Israel/Palestine in the 90's and reported that there are far more Jews in Israel who see the Palestinian side of the issue then there are Jews in the US. Jews in Israel are far less likely to blindly support everything their government does than are Jews in the US. I think there also is an unwillingness to believe that such atrocities are committed in their name. It is hard to accept that the victims should have flipped so far as to become the victimizer on such a grand scale.

There is also a tendency among all Americans to see all Arabs as one people - rather than recognizing that the Lebanese are not Iraqis who are not Saudis, etc let alone recognize that the concept of ownership of property also exists in the Middle East. They also believe that the land rightfully belongs to the Jews because they have bought the propaganda that no-one was living in Palestine in 1948. A Jewish friend of mine sent me an e-mail which said this, "Middle Easterners didn't have the urge to kill Israelites just because they want to spread into land which doesn't belong to them... it's not even a lot of land.... when they've literally got much more land at their disposal to occupy" (I sent her Avi Shlaim's article in reply on Friday and have not heard anything since).

America has demonized Arabs for decades which makes it much easier to believe the lies told about them by the Israelis.

11. Have you seen these documentaries that contain Naom Chomsky discussing this?
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 09:13 PM by Turborama
They both give a very good insight into what's been going on...

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported. Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how--through the use of language, framing and context--the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied terrorities appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one.

The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israel's PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics.

Occupation 101

A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.

The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.

The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.

There's also these two which added together tell quite a scary story:

Rapture Ready: The Christians United for Israel Tour
Max Blumenthal's latest takes us on a shocking and at times bizarre tour of right-wing Pastor John Hagee's annual Washington-Israel Summit, blowing the cover off the Christian Zionist movement in the process. Starring Joe Lieberman, Tom DeLay, Pastor John Hagee, Ambassador Dore Gold and a host of rapture-ready evangelicals praying for Armaggedon.
