"In 1939, in a stadium much like this, in Munich Germany, they packed it out with young men and women in brown shirts, for a fanatical man standing behind a podium named Adolf Hitler, the personification of evil.

And in that stadium, those in brown shirts formed with their bodies a sign that said, in the whole stadium, "Hitler, we are yours."

And they nearly took the world.

1. Honestly?
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 06:42 PM by Bicoastal
This seems fairly innocuous compared to other things I've heard this guy say.

Being Jewish, I have no idea what it literally means to devote yourself to Christ as much as the Brown shirts devoted themselves to Hitler--but it seems like the general message is to devote yourself to good instead of evil. I'm not hearing where he asks them to actually DO what the Hitler Youth did--he wants them to emulate their devotion, not their philosophy.

But that may just be me playing devil's advocate.

4. agreed. I think you don't take Warren lightly either - it's just that we know he is capable of evil
as is any person, and especially any person given power - and he has many followers, but, yes, the man has said far more nasty things. Maybe they could have put some of his statements in there and sped it up a little between his comments and they'd have a great vid with a message.

3. I gather this Warren jerk never heard of the Barman Decleration
The Barmen Declaration or The Theological Declaration of Barmen 1934 is a statement of the Confessing Church opposing the Nazi-supported "German-Christian" movement. The "German Christians" who were hostile to the Confessing Church combined extreme nationalism with anti-Semitism. The Barmen Declaration specifically rejects the subordination of the church to the state. Rather, the Declaration states that the church "is solely Christ's property, and that it lives and wants to live solely from his comfort and from his direction in the expectation of his appearance."

Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemöller, and countless other unknown heroes would have a few choice words with this ass, Rick Warren.

5. OK, Warren, dedication to a cause can certainly be a good thing
I question his choice of examples, in that he seems only to have picked the evil, homicidal causes to highlight. Weird. How about the civil rights movement, Rick? That was an example of dedicated people making a big difference. Or the women's suffrage movement? Or the anti-slavery movement in Britain? Can we get some uplift here, instead of groups who were willing to kill their own countrymen if they didn't "go along"?

8. No matter how you cut it, it's militaristic in tone.
Over on Kos, the discussion is tending to focus on 'why Hitler and Mao?' to illustrate the devotion of followers as opposed to King or Ghandi.

Hitler and Mao were so 'completely evil', yet Warren clearly appreiciates the fact that they could whip their followers into a blind and violent frenzy., Besides, they made the trains run on time.

King and Ghandi are too anti-authoritarian.

Warren wants these souls for his own narcisstic purposes. And he has come with a fucking sword to claim them.

(this was a previous post on the same topic. I'm glad this news is getting out. K&R)

9. He did not say that. This is not a good post.
He was making the point to be passionate in order to reform the world just like Hitler was able to do. He also says Hitler is the personification of evil. He never said kids should be like Hitler.
