Just in time for the Holidays! Affluenza describes how we became a consumer society-and how to escape the endless treadmill of consumerism. It's a bit corny in the beginning, but stick with it. You'll be amazed at the tactics corporations are taking today to even turn the youngest children into life long debt ridden super consumers.

Please K & R if you believe this is a message worth spreading!

TV Free Here For 6 Years Now - I would never consider having one again.

Will take a book any day over a tube.

Now the Internet is another matter altogether.

8. I have "Escape from Affluenza" on VHS. Maybe I'll try to
transfer it to DVD and load it onto YouTube someday. It's even better than the original imho.

9. The book is also very good.
The David Horsey cartoons alone make it worth it.

13. Recommended---and also suggesting storyofstuff. Pass it on, please.
Everyone should see Affluenza and StoryOfStuff and look at how unsustainable we have been, we cannot continue if we want for our kids and their kids to have a world.

Thank you and happy holidays!

PS: Consider giving on behalf of your friends and family to nonprofits or good causes, such as animal shelters.

16. Interesting "stuff". Thanks for posting. The Lebow quote on consumption caught my interest and in
doing some digging I found I'm not the only one that wanted to know if that was meant to be critical or prescriptive. Lots of interest in Victor Lebow. This blog is where I ended up so far....

http://whatdoino-steve.blogspot.com/2007/12/victor-lebows-complete-original-1955.html

Got there from here....

http://wordpress.com/tag/victor-lebow/

Got there from comments on a Youtube post by Jr high kids poking fun at Annie Leonard for painting a bleak picture and not giving them a step by step plan of what to do. :eyes: Sorry, don't have the link to that one anymore.

14. In the book
The Underground History of American Education they apparently mention that America's school curriculam from early in the last century was designed to create consumers from an early by making the classes boring .

18. Kicked. Thank you for posting.
As someone who remembers the burning shame that came along with growing up poor, at times I still find myself sacrificing the important things so my children can somehow avoid the same thing. I realize I am just passing that crap on. Sick shit, if you will pardon me.

Bookmarked so my children and I can watch this together tomorrow. I give them props, they live with little in the way of luxury, but even by myself it was seen as forced due to an illness preventing me from working, and a system that says otherwise.

If you had asked me an hour ago if my family and I suffered from this, I would have laughed. No longer. Thank you.
