Unhinged Saxby Chambliss Grabs Camera When Reporter Asks Him About Imperial Sugar Case
By: Blue Texan Friday November 21, 2008 10:25 am

A reporter for the Florida Times-Union asked him about his refusal to honor a subpoena in the Imperial Sugar wrongful death lawsuit. Chambliss can be heard saying, "You can take it away now" as he pushes the camera away.

3. I donated to Martin last night. Very little $, but had to do it.
Don't have much, at all. Donated to Gore, Kerry, Obama, Lamont and now Martin.

Speaks volumes for how I feel about Leib and the Sham.

6. The problem is the simple math.
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 02:57 PM by breadandwine
Chambliss came in just under 50% in the election. Now with the runoff the Libertarian candidate is not in the running and his votes (about 3%) will surely go to Chambliss. Other things being equal, that gives Chambliss 53% and a win in the runoff. Add to this the fact that Georgia is a Diebold state. Then add that for reasons I don't understand there seems to be no move by President Elect Obama to campaign in the state, which local Democrats say would be critical. There are simply a lot of voters who won't bother to turn out for the Democrat in the runoff unless Obama comes there personally. This really looks like a win for Chambliss.

Another problem is in the Franken campaign in Minnesota that bodes ill for the Georgia race too. Many new young voters went into the voting booth and came out only seconds later saying they had voted for Obama in Minnesota but hadn't bothered to vote for any other races. Nobody told them to vote down ticket, or nobody got them to. This shows a lack of enthusiasm by some voters for races beyond the presidency. So if that was a problem in a state like Minnesota, it could be a similar problem in Georgia in the runoff. You'd think that some young people would have the wherewithal to connect the dots and realize that President Obama is going to need help on Capitol Hill. In many cases they didn't. Without Obama's personal intervention, which doesn't seem to be happening, Chambliss is going to win the runoff.

7. Libertarians would split
I don't agree that the libertarian's 3% go to Chambliss.

Libertarians like the ostensibly "smaller government" of the republican platform, but are also for the individual liberties more aligned with the democratic platform (aka what people do in their private lives is nobody else's business). Though I know nothing about Chambliss... if he were more of a Ron Paul republican (i.e. more libertarian than the party as a whole), then yes, Chambliss would get more of the libertarian vote for sure.

Also, though, it is possible than many libertarian voters, not enthusiastic about either remaining choice, will just stay home.

So that's at least two reasons not to automatically add that entire 3% to Chambliss.

8. Franken problem reversed
Another way to look at the problem that people didn't bother or weren't well informed enough to vote down the ticket...

Right now there's no doubt a lot of awareness of the runoff. Rather than the senate choice being secondary, the whole point of the election, and all the publicity surrounding it, is to elect a senator. The current election will not be overshadowed by the presidential election. People will be coming out specifically to vote for senator.

Now maybe some people won't bother if it isn't as "important" as president (no reason to assume that will affect one party more than the other), but I think there will be an excitement level about voting for senator now that might have been missing on November 4. And there obviously won't be ballots with no choice for senator if that's the only thing on the ballot!

Apart from whatever local issues in the state will motivate their choices, there should also be some voters coming out just to essentially support (or specifically not support) Obama through their senatorial vote. Now, the state went McCain, so that doesn't bode so well, but it's an open question as to whether the "losers" (the McCain voters) remain motivated enough to go the polls again essentially to try to "snub" Obama, compared to the motivation of the "winning" voters to go and further support their candidate's victory. If the McCain voters are angry/upset enough about Obama's victory, yes... but winners tend to be enthusiastic and losers tend to be a bit demoralized, and so possibly a greater percentage of McCain voters may just sit it out.

I guess we'll no soon, but the point is, the math isn't necessarily so simple.

16. I hate to say it, breadandwine, but you are probably right about the ignorant masses
voting for Obama then heading for home. I made many hundreds of calls for the Obama campaign and not once did I ask folks to get out to vote for the Democratic ticket or any specific Dem other than our President-elect. Honestly, it never occurred to me, and apparently to no one in the Obama campaign leadership, to remind everyone how important it is to vote down-ticket.

Of course, the other way to look at it is that Americans are now so stupid, politically ignorant, or dumbed down that they don't have the wherewithal to figure out that two and two equal four--politically speaking.

I agree that our President-elect needs to get to Jawja and inspire Dems and especially the black voters to once again be patriotic American participants in Democracy. He is the Professor who taught us that lesson. Now it's time to reinforce it.

9. The Answer
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 03:59 PM by JimboBillyBubbaBob
On the hot, steamy Georgia afternoon that his folks conceived him in the last century, a 78rpm acrylic disc was playing. A blues saxophone player was wailing away, his name lost to history. His folks were so impressed by the sax induced amorous mood they decided to name him after the moment. Bysax sounded to odd, so they reversed the order to Saxby. The rest has been history.

14. WHAT A COWARD! THIS SHOULD BE MARTIN'S NEXT AD!
and it should say, "this was just 3 days ago" or whatever, and show him getting all huffy puffy and pushing away the news camera like he's a god! what an ASS!

sadly, it would be safe to ASSume, ha, that the black vote is not going to be there for Martin in the numbers it was, yes, there will be 25-35% turnout from that group, but they need to turn out like they did for Obama, and this would potentially go to Martin - otherwise SAXBY wins by 8%. Of course, if the Martin campaign ran this ad against Saxby and brought Sen. Cleland on talking about how he hasn't been there for votes for the people that matter in this country, and has been a B*sh yes man, maybe more than 45% or so of the white/latin votes will come out.

Does anyone suspect that the runoff voter turnout will top 50%? I can't see that, I hope I'm wrong...
