Just last week I replaced every incandescent bulb in the house with a compact fluorescent bulb.
All told, I replaced 24 60 watt bulbs and 9 100 watt bulbs.
Let's do the math, shall we?
24 X 60 = 1440 watts
9 X 100 = 900 watts
Total old usage = 2340 watts
New Bulbs
24 X 13 = 312 watts
9 X 25 = 175 watts
Total usage now = 487 watts
Wattage saved = 1853 watts
To put it another way, I am now using 79% less electricity to power my house.
The total cost to replace all those bulbs? $90.
Yup, you read that right: $90.
Go here and put your moral objections in your cowhide wallet:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/search-ng.gsp?search_redirect=false&dept=0&search_query=cflYou can get a 12 pack of 13 watt (60 watt equivalent) CFL bulbs for $20 at Wal-mart online.
Nobody else comes close.
What else am I doing? Well, we recycle incessantly. Every week when we go to the grocery store on Saturday we drop off all our recycles. 4 years ago we were making 4 bags of trash a week. Now that we're recycling, we make only 2 bags a week.
I wish I could afford a hybrid car, but, maybe later.
Regards,
