St. Louis is a pretty racially charged area. Across the Mississippi is East St. Louis, which is mostly African-American, very impoverished and has a very high crime rate. St. Louis itself is pretty segregated by ethnicity and income. There's also a southern vibe there that I don't entirely understand.

The big difference between what Obama has been able to do, and what McCain is doing is that all across the country Obama's rallies have been peacefully uniting communities that haven't thought they had much in common in the past. I love seeing people from all ethnicities and backgrounds smiling, happy and optimistic over the same thing! It makes me feel like we all share something. Unlike McFailin who is just trying to unite extremists to hate and fear.

p.s. - I went up in that arch one time with a bunch of third graders. It's very small up in the little elevator cars. One of them decided to start screaming. Then they all started screaming. At the top, the windows are really small and you have to sort of lean over to see out. It feels really small, and strange. I will never do that again.
