Barack Obama and John McCain were both speakers at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner tonight held at the NYC Waldorf Astoria.

During his speech, Obama dropped a bomb on an a forthcoming October surpise. He will reveal...that... his middle name is not really, Hussein, it is STEVE!

42. Here are the videos of McCain's Al Smith speech

I have to admit, parts of it were funny. Obama seemed to think so too.

109. Very different types of humor... I like Obama's better
Obama's style, delivery and timing remind me of John F. Kennedy's. His humor was more ironic & sophisticated, and he displayed integrity and self-assuredness, with a touch of self-depreciation that in my mind, made him more accessible and endearing.

McCain was funny, but in general, I thought there was a more vindictive, competitive, mean-spirited edge to his humor.

give the men on stage credit for their delivery. Steve from Krypton has got the comedic timing. Very smooth and professional. McCain's pretty funny, too. Where was the drummer with the rim shots?

Obama seems much more at ease with himself.

Even though parts of McCain's speech were funny, he still came off as wound a little too tightly.

sense much empathy. Paradoxically, I liked his brutal humour, sometimes directed at himself, yet I was irrationally fearful he'd say something disrespectful. What I did hear was hilarious but kind of hollow. I suppose because of his strained, dour demeanour during those debates. His facial expression seems so hard all the time. He seemed completely self-confident, unlike Obama, who, I thought rushed his jokes a little, and sounded somewhat nervous. Which is not difficult to understand.

167. I wouldn't trust Obama...
if I felt he was totally comfortable in that starched collar, hanging out with all that money and smug self-importance. I'm glad he pointed out how much the dinner looked like an AIG party... that was entirely appropriate, and one of the reasons he is my choice for president. I hope he can influence the corruption in Washington as much as this country needs him to.

It was the first time I was able to stomach him in months. It was well delivered and he paid a very respectful tribute to Obama. Of course, I know that will probably be the last respectful comment we hear for the next three weeks.

146. Just curious if you've been paying attention to the events of the past few months.
I don't set policy that shapes the events of a world in complete and utter crisis. They do. This is no time for laughter or humor on the part of any "public servant" who cares at all about what is happening to the planet and the people (well, those who aren't billionaires). They should only act with a sorrowful, heavy heart and total humility. So, yes, this only applies to the powerful - those who are the only ones who have the money and power to enact policies that can bring about large-scale change.

I know we don't actually live in a democracy, but I do expect leaders to behave with a modicum of dignity and a sense of urgency when the world is in total crisis. I know that's an unrealistic expectation of our mighty rulers, though.

15. Now there is the charisma thats been missing from the Democratic nominees in the last
2 elections. Hearing him joke and kid you can tell that he took no offense on anything McCain threw at him. I get the impression that even Hillery was surprised that he had so much class. Man, if america wasn't racist or Obama had a white father he would be so far ahead now it wouldn't be funny, maybe even a bigger landslide then Reagan. It really disgusts me that a mans skin is more important than his character in 2008. Obama is clearly a class act.

38. Quite a difference between Obama's and McCain's coverage...
YouTube is carrying McCain's speech via Fox tv, so there is a distracting crawl across the bottom of the screen, half the screen is covered by other stuff.

Obama's YouTube was off the MSNBC coverage, clean screen.

Gotta admit McCain really did pull off some good jokes.

43. Dirty damn cheap shot by McCain in his intro of Obama's speech
One of the rules of comedy is not tell everyone how funny your joke is beforehand. You'll make your audience defensive and your laughs smaller.

Asshole McCain tells the audience that Obama's routine is going to be the funniest fifteen minutes ever and sets Obama up against himself. Obama, as we saw in the debates, stood tall, said what he had to say and was so funny McCain looked like he was shitting in his Depends.

127. I actually thought that was some of the funniest stuff McCain had
It was pure political humor. Are you familiar with the concept of high and low expectations? Part of McCain's bit was doing an over-the-top raising of expectations, that no one - not Steve Martin, not Robin Williams, no one could have met. And that was the point, that's what made it hilarious. My wife and I were watching Rachel when they cut live to the end of McCain's bit. We were chuckling occasionally, and wincing often at some of those barbs that we thought went too far (Olbermann in a padded room, for instance).

But that final setup for Obama? That was pure comedy gold, and we were laughing our asses off. Other than McCain's incredibly gracious "Don't let it get out of this room" remarks towards Obama (which I think that the Obama campaign needs to immediately make into a new commercial!!!), it made me feel the most charitable towards McSame as I have in 8 years.

Obama did great in his moment. There's nothing wrong in admitting that McThusala did a good job a delivering some of his humor bits as well.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 11:45 PM by krkaufman
... when they were sitting, listening to the other. Obama seemed to be genuinely laughing and enjoying himself, while McCain seemed largely humorless, brief clapping followed by a quick return to his stiff demeanor.

82. Why didn't he learn his script beforehand?
I've been wondering.. It seems he hasn't read the script more than twice, he keeps on keeping an eye on each joke he has to say. McCain did the same.. You gotta know that maybe most of their speeches are written by script-writers, who have precisely picked up each word. See, not that I didn't laugh at the jokes, not that I'm not a supporter of Obama's, it's just that it annoys me to see someone who's going to be a president to be reading 'his' jokes. :) Cheers!

Barack was funny as hell last night. Both wifey and I were laughing uncontrollably.

As much as I hate to admit it, McCain did alright too. Barack was funnier, but I liked both roasts.
If McCain had run his campaign with the spunk, fire, and humility he showed last night, I think the polls would be closer than they are. That said, I'm glad he's a stuffy curmudgeon on the stump, erratic on policies, and just plain negative. I want Obama to be president.

Perfect end to a speech-- quoting Alfred Smith. I'm not used to eloquence in our public figures-- not since JFK, RFK, and MLK

133. This video cuts Obama's speech short.
He had a lot more to say that was very eloquent about our American system.

McCain incidentally, was VERY funny, and also said some very nice things about Obama, and about the bigotry of the past. His campaign is doing a lot to undermine that sentiment in the robo-calls we've heard, but at least he was very conciliatory at the event.

179. McCain choked on the word bigotry..another one of his tics
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 12:57 AM by captainjack08
McCain had a hell of a time trying to get the word "bigotry" out... he choked on the word. You can see people behind him notice he couldn't get it out. Looked like he was about to literally barf the word up.

See 9:04 on this video... almost felt sorry for him...

I was going to skip over it, having seen a clip on GMA, but it didn't do Obama justice. He DOES have a sense of humor and comedic timing. I listen to El Douchebag, especially when things suck for the Repubs, and he was saying that Obama doesn't have a sense of humor. Man, it was so cathartic for Obama because he was allowed to get in quite a few digs. Love the one about Faux Noise.

138. Just amazing. I was howling at some of those lines.. But shows what a bizzaro world it is..
To have McCain, who has run the nastiest campaign in history, sitting there laughing and clapping at Obama's jokes, and to have Obama say such nice things about him at the end. It's just weird... I guess it's that politics thing where McCain and Co. think that they can do those filthy robo calls and allow such hate to fester, and everyone is still buddy-buddy.

I think it's wonderful to see the nasty stuff recycled into jokes that way.. it really takes the sting out of them. And I loved seeing Hillary, she was laughing so hard she could barely lift her head.

156. If I were a complete consciousless sociopath and was voting for McCain...
...I'd've watched his shtick with a sinking heart. He was funny and not at all hesitant, he could've been considered deadpan instead of just plain creepy like he was during the debates. Where was this McCain when his supporters needed him?

I'll tell you: last night's Al Smith dinner gave me insight into the fact that he sold his soul in a Faustian bargain (Rove as Mephistopholes), agreeing to throw all his "straight talk" under the bus, getting into bed with the same bastards who screwed him in 2000 because he wanted to win at any cost.

If his life were a work of fiction, it would be a literary tragedy with a huge moral theme and lesson.

But real life is far more interesting than fiction. Someone should tell that to the entire Republican party!!!

158. Does anyone here remember the Kennedy press conferences?
I think that a President that's as comfortable with humor as he is with hard facts will be a terrific change. And he even knows how to recover from the jokes that bombed (like the "Steve" line).

Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 02:30 PM by dukebballfan
I know the chances are slim, but would anyone happen to know if there is a transcript available of Obama's speech? I have dial-up at home and feel like I'm missing out on something pretty good.:argh:

(I'm a new poster, as I'm sure you can all tell. Not sure how to make it so that it will not seem that I'm replying to the post directly above mine.)

that Obama was a accomplished and polished speaker,
this video buries it in the endzone! Outstanding!

(and there really wasn't any doubt of it, but apparently some
repukes haven't been reading their memos )

166. OK, fine, McCain was kinda funny....
we'll give him his own sitcom after he gets his ass handed to him by Obama on election night.....on CW...then he'll be a footnote after 5 episodes of failing ratings, and we'll be done with the crusty old sonofabitch....

171. Sorry to burst bubbles but Al Smith
was involved in the coup attempt against FDR. My research into who he was reveals one nasty, vengeful son-of-bitch who consorted with Mafia kingpin Lucky Luciano.

It's a bit ludicrous, don't you think, to have a dinner in his honor.

173. Pray (if that's your thing) that this man becomes your president
Obama seems to grow the more I see of him. The reporting in the newspapers down here in Aus is starting to reach a fever pitch, and I'm pretty sure, as with most other countries, most of us are hoping that Obama gets over the line!

He not only seems like a fitting and inspirational American president, he also seems like a fitting and inspirational "leader of the free world".......which really is a title that America needs to work hard to retain (earn back?).

Good luck guys, as we'd say down here: "Carn Barack" (C'mon Barack)
