I've lived in all corners of this country and I've seen more white trash than minority trash. I've worked with bus boys who supoprted their families and lived in small apts. I worked for a black woman who put herself through Harvard on scholarship after being told by her Southern high school to try for a vocational education at best. I've seen it all. 27. It dates me just to write that I remember when

radio commentators who were caught telling demonstrable lies were fired. Maybe this was just an artifact of 1954 - 1963, because I know for sure that there were people making a living on the radio in the 1930's stirring up anti-semitism by telling the baldest of lies. Post-WW II morality, when the vast majority of young men returned from war wanting to live in a place that was the opposite of a war zone where might made right, fueled a major grassroots inclination toward fairness, especially once the commie hysteria was reduced in 1954. Middle-aged men who had not served continued to play their vicious power games, but as the success of the film Man in the Grey Flannel Suit indicated, most ex-servicemen had no stomach for it.

Anyhow, it used to be that if a group of people brought proof of a pattern of lies to a radio network executive, they would generally see the commentator as a liability and fire him or her. This was also the time of the fairness doctrine so that the new TV news was forced to air credible debunking from NGO spokespeople or opposing politicians when any extremist statements made it into their broadcasts. That situation probably contributed to radio accountability, since TV could not echo utter lies. I'm old enough to feel a jolt of horrified amazement whenever I hear what the rw talkers are getting away with on the air. That Limbaugh clip presupposes so much wrongheadedness along with the lies one hardly knows where to begin refuting it. And then I remember how helpless advocates of on-air truth are these days.
