80. How many of the speeches he wrote for Bush were hateful and divisive?
Now that he's seeing the polls showing McCain/Palin losing ground despite the violent tones of their rallies, he wants to be peacemaker and somehow equate Maddow's sarcasm with cries of bodily harm to Obama from the McCain/Palin rallies.

No he doesn't. Everything he said was BS.... and he knows it. He pulled a "palin"...he changed the subject. Rachel acknowledges that and then (God I love her!) brings up the equivalency problem.

Where was all this hand wringing from GOP operatives when Bush was calling any of us who didn't like the Iraq invasion traitors, un-american, siding with terrorists?
Where was all this sturm und drang back in the 1990s when Newty Gingrich was handing out lists of words like "traitor, deviant, elitist, dangerous, disaster" and instructions on how to associate them with "liberal"?

Don't tell Rachel to watch her step, Mr. Frum....spend a hour or so explaining why your GOP party has initiated and supported... even institutionalized.... the so called "politics of personal destruction" you guys practically invented. Oh sure, Dems aren't perfect and engage in such things....but not in such an organized, strenuous and disingenuous way as the GOP has for the past decade. There's that bothersome equivalency argument again! There's just no comparison.

48. The pretend 'high road'
He is thinking too hard trying to be intelligent, thoughtful while his mind is looking for an opportunity to throw in the little jabs of insults. And when he starts a spat - Rachel doesn't let him get away with the rhetorical bullshit!

At the end he smiles, trying to pretend to be humorous, and Rachel doesn't buy into it. She's too smart.

I love quick thinking intelligent people - Go Rachel!

One thing about Rachel's show: She is fair, but she will not let the guest frame the discussion. She doesn't get rattled. She doesn't fumble. She 'forces' them back to the topic. That is a lesson I wish those on the left would learn - but I truly believe her secret is her quick thinking intelligence and wit that enhances her wide range of knowledge.

I also love when she throws out her challenging questions - as in her story on Sarah Palin and Troopergate tonight: "and by truth you mean what exactly?"

12. David Frum and other Jewish neocons are too stupid
to realize the utter disdain and hatred people like Sarah Palin and Pat Robertson hold for them. To the SP's of the Republican party David Frum is an intellectual city dweller who does not reflect the "small town" values she and they claim to hold so dear.

I hope he has an epiphany and leaves the Republican party.

89. Don't Return to Sender!
As far as we Canadians are concerned, Frum has chosen the states. He's a bad fit for Canada and he knows it. His late mother, Barbara Frum, is still enshrined as a news icon at the CBC although 'why?' is probably the best question; she was never that great to me, but that's the MotherCorp for you...weak reporters/presenters get jobs for life and the talented ones get shuffled around until they give up. I support the CBC, but to anyone who has worked there you quickly recognize it as a virulently nepotistic atmosphere dominated by ego battles that are almost gladiatorial. There's also a considerable amount of, let's say, 'favouritism' as well as a large cadre of useless middle management kept on largely due to this favouritism. If Frum is ever forced to retreat to Canada, the CBC will give him a job.

I don't have a TV these days, so I haven't really seen much of Rachel other than her being on Olbermann (which I watch over the internet). I am absolutely blown away by her thoughtful, intelligent discourse, the fact that she listened to Frum, understood what he was getting at, and refuted it firmly several times. I guess I'm going to have to watch her show on the internet now.

20. These guys aren't used to being challenged without screaming
It actually feels awkward because it is so much different. I'm glad she didn't back down. When you think about it, it is astoundingly outrageous. He did, without any doubt, assert that her sarcasm was equivalent to calling a person a terrorist or calling for one's assassination.

I guess she won't get many visitors from the right. But that's OK. Just keep telling the truth and building the ratings. There will come a time when the cowards on the right will find they have to come out from their cozy little enclave at Faux.

Maybe the most extreme will never give up their fortress, but as time passes, there will be more and more moderate voices on the conservative end that they must engage Rachael on her terms -- which aren't really unfair. The only rule is that you can't talk nonsense and expect to get away without a challenge.

33. Don't get me wrong, Frum is a smarmy snot of the first water . . .
But the notion of a more thoughtful debate about public issues is a good one.

Trouble is, the Hannities, O'Reillies, Limbaughs, and Savages of the world poisoned that well a long time ago, and clearing their taint from the dialectical groundwater is extremely difficult when they keep pumping the toxins in.

96. I tend to agree with you
Frum was sniffing around some good points, but the person making them was basically hypocritical for advocating them. He was part of "the problem" for much of his professional career. Ask him about Willey Horton and get back to us on "adult discussion".

That said, I thought Rachel was a bit back on her heals at first. To some extent she was in a tough position of not wanting to go off on a "guest", but also try to control the show a bit.

There has been a loss of "adult conversation" in our political discourse. It can be traced to many things, and one of them is the phenomenon of "entertainment news". Jon Stewart and SNL are fun, but they are not a replacement for more serious, thoughtful, and respectful discourse. Alternately, it was the media's attempt at "objectivity" which the right wing/conservatism used to their advantage to undermine intelligent discourse. Their attacks on education and reasoning (reality based thinking as a perjorative) was so outrageous that it was worthy of derision. But objective news shows tried to show deference, even to the absurd. In the name of objectivity, some highly accomplished academic would find themselves being placed on some equal footing with the political hack/surrogate of the day. This all came to a peak with the advent of Rush and Fox and all of the "opinion" shows which are nothing more than "propoganda" shows. But somehow the left is suppose to not participate in this area of public discourse.

Frum tried to do to Rachel what Stewart did to Tucker Carlson and company. The problem is, Stewart was in a position to make such a claim. He's a comedian saying "look, don't look to me as standard of discourse. I'm SUPPOSED to be funny and light weight. You're passing yourself off as serious discourse.". Frum on the other hand, was a guy that participated in the distruction of "adult political discourse" and is now somehow trying to climb on a high horse. And do it I might add with someone who could think her way around him on her worst day.

And Rachael Maddow achieved it on LIBERAL terms! Frum needs to take that statement to his ridiculous R. W. buddies who make a hash of any serious political discussion!
Maddow is a natinal treasure ad I hope she reads this, as I couldn't find access to e-mail her on the MSNBC site.

I have no doubt that she likes to have political discussions with the opposition. I am always game for an echo chamber discussion with like-minded people, but I think it's fun having an intelligent discussion with republicans. Note that I said INTELLIGENT discussion.

I can no longer talk politics with my dad, as he only listens to Faux News and conservative talk radio (including Squealer Limbaugh). When I (or my wife, or anyone else who disagrees with the rhetoric from those sources) present a different type of view, my dad completely shuts down and starts the accusations of us only listening to the liberal media. No matter how many times I explain to him that I get my news from lots of sources (and yes, some of those sources are conservative sources) he is unreceptive to any discussion. This is also the same man who thinks that Fox is often too liberal. That is not what I think of as intelligent discussion.

In contrast, my best friend and the best man at my wedding, is a hardcore republican. Not only that, but he is a lobbyist for an oil company in DC. I really enjoy political discussions with him. I don;t agree with much of what he says, but I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is incredibly smart. He always has interesting perspectives on the top issues, and he presents them in a way that is respectful and insightful. That creates what I think of as intelligent discussion.

Now, I know that Dr. Maddow doesn't always have the luxury of intelligent guests, but she has a knack of keeping her cool with whomever she interviews. I'm sure that she sees friendly debate with the opposition as mentally stimulating. I just wish that there could be more news talk shows with hosts with a demeanor like hers.

Frum suffers from the mental illness afflicting almost all Republicans, thought disorders compounded by loose associations resulting in uncontrollable lies spewing out like projectile vomit. Frums need a good punch in the face every time he starts bullshitting. With pain comes awareness.

47. Commissar Frum can kindly go fuck himself.
"(Paleoconservatives) have made common cause with the left-wing and Islamist antiwar movements in this country and in Europe. They deny and excuse terror. They espouse a potentially self-fulfilling defeatism. They publicize wild conspiracy theories. And some of them explicitly yearn for the victory of their nation's enemies.... War is a great clarifier. It forces people to take sides. The paleoconservatives have chosen — and the rest of us must choose too. In a time of danger, they have turned their backs on their country. Now we turn our backs on them."

Triumphalists are always cowards in the end.

49. Frum a massive hypocrite
Thanks for looking up that quote. I was looking for quotes myself.

Look, everyone, forget how Rachel handled him or not. The gross hypocrisy of Frum almost defies absurdity. While Bush ran the most divisive government ever, shutting down all reasonable discourse, what did Frum do? He wrote Bush's speeches! He penned articles and editorials accusing those of who did not agree with him as being enemies to America. He wrote a book defending the Iraq war, a war clearly based on lies.

After doing all that, he accuses Maddow of coarsening the discourse? My guess is that Frum is not serious, that he still plays the neo-con, willing to tell lies and to dissemble in order to further his political goals.

54. Frum IS what his name means. . .by golly!
"The word "frum" can have other specific meanings depending on the context in which it is used. Often the terms frum and frei indicate one's social associations as much as his/her actual religious commitment.

Someone who is extremely frum or devout is known as a frummer. This term is generally used in a positive sense if he/she is frum "unto themselves" but does not force their frumness (frumkeit) on others.

"Frummer" can also have a negative connotation similar to "Hasid Shotah" (pious idiot), which is how the Talmud describes a man who sees a woman drowning, but will not save her lest he touch her. A frummer in that sense refers to someone who is more concerned with the technical aspects of religious achievement and displays outward signs of religiosity, but lacks a sense of ethics and/or respect for his fellow man; in other words someone who has their priorities mixed up with no sense of proportion. In this vein, the word "frum" has been said to be an acronym for "fiel rishus un veinig mitzvos" – "much wickedness and few mitzvos." (See Backronym.)

Unlike the Yiddish word "ehrlich" ("honest") which also means "pious", and is always used in a positive sense; the word "frum" can be used in a negative sense for: "hypocritically pious", "holier-than-thou", "sanctimonious"; or in a positive sense for: "pious", "devout", "God-fearing" and "upright". A combination is sometimes used to describe someone as "frum and ehrlich", which captures all the positive attributes of these words and would roughly mean "upright" or "righteous" (tzadik). . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frum

IOW. . .What a pompous ass!

And. . .Rachel Maddow was superbly relentless in exposing FRUM'S true-to-name self!

K U D O S R A C H E L !

58. He is sexist in his attitude.
He reminds me of the prospective boss who, during a job interview after I finished law school, said to me that he just did not think that I looked like I could read a balance sheet. I had written grants and done the budgets for a good-sized non-profit with properties and projects worth millions for years. I could not believe that a man could be so foolish as to assume that he is so superior for any reason.

This Frum is stuck on himself, arrogant. After 8 years of the divisiveness and hate-mongering of the Bush administration speeches (not to mention the partisan finger-pointing of the Clinton years), some of which he apparently wrote, he has a lot of nerve criticizing Rachel Maddow. Her wit must really hit home for him.

Of course, the people at the American Enterprise Institute with which Frum is apparently affiliated must really be embarrassed right now. They were so sure that their economic theories were the cure for all that ails the world -- and just look where they have led us. What is trickling down is not prosperity and happy days but bankruptcy and defeat for Republicans in the November election. Frum as much as admitted it.

I guess I should feel sorry for Frum. Like the emperor, he and his right-wing friends have been caught without their clothes on.

Barabara Frum, a iconic Canadian television journalist who eventually had her own self-titled show and given the Order of

Canada. Rumour has it that her personal political views were more liberal than her budding fascist-minded son. She

died of leukemia at age 54, but the stress and disappointment of having a son like that must had her praying for

death.

Another thing, that struck me when I first heard that David Frum, a Canadian right wing idiot, was writing speeches

for the POTUS??? I mean, did that have to get out-sourced too? I see from his Wiki that he wasn't even a Naturalized

Citizen while he was writing those blatant lies.

So glad Rachel called him out.

thirdly, and finally, he was a former speech writer for Bush. his job for years was to avoid the point to try to drive a silly, one-sided view home. he's part of the reason there is zero confidence in the government at the moment.

103. He sounds like a typical NPR liberal, actually. Most listeners of NPR
and the BBC, et al, have told me they don't care for MSNBC's shows like KO and now Rachel Maddow, because they prefer more "serious" shows, just the news, etc. I have yet to hear a conservative make such an argument, and frankly, I welcome it. I mean, this is after all, a Fox News & right wing talk radio phenomenon. Keith's and Rachel's shows are rarely mean spirited, but they are a lot more about politics than issues. However, they would never exist if Fox News didn't exist.

I think David Frum has woken from his 8 year slumber, looked around, and doesn't like what he sees. Well, if he really wanted to be extra courageous, he would now go on Fox News and bring the same message. I doubt he would be allowed to talk, the way Rachel let him talk on her show.

I thought it was an interesting conversation. Unlike many bloggers, I don't see how Rachel smacked him down. She sounded defensive to me. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if she went a little more high browed on her show.

Boy, talk about a boring ass hole. I watched that interview and I wish Maddow would have dumped more crap on him. Condescending to the nth degree. I know Rachel had more important things to discuss but I wish she had pulled out both guns and leveled this ass. Talk about a typical Republican...a boring white guy who probably joined the Young Republicans in junior high and kept a photo of Ronald Reagan on his wall growing up. A perfect guy to carry a sport coat for someone like Cheney or Wolfowitz. What is with these guys! He'll get his come uppance on Nov. 4th.

His hatred ooozed out of every fiber of his being.

I have heard Frum said some true things about McCain Palin and I recall another time when I was shocked to hear him say the truth about Bush (I think it was about Bush) but last night he was disgusting.

And the call US elitist?

the poultry references are really interesting - but following that reference someone else said Rachel doesn't let him ruffle her feathers.

He does look like he is jerking his head out like a chicken. The unfortunate part is that his eyebrows turn down and the way he directs his words to the side and the tendency to whine - it all supports the 'woe is me' and 'woe are the Republicans' because of all the dirty things Dems do to the Republicans. He is all about appearing intellectual and superior, but his business is all about spreading hate and twisting reality - while maintaining an expectation that Republicans should be treated reverently (no matter what amount of death and debt they cause and the entire range of things they destroy - voting systems, soverign nations, Constitution, Bill of Rights, treaties, reputations, family health and the basics of life for some, veterans care, foreign relations, emergency follow through).

She listens, but doesn't allow his or others rubbish - she slows down the calculated twists of reality they are always spreading.

119. What a weasel...
...Here's a guy who was at the core of the worst administration in history and is saying that a Democratic Administration, combined with a Democratic Congress, would be bad for the country. I mean how in hell much worse could we get compared to the pricks that Frum has been an enabler and scribe for? Wish Ms. Maddow had called him on that, then again she did pretty well as is...and she didn't even have to bring up Faux and the whole array of rightwing radio talkees that have, and continue to, rial the pot from the right.

As for Wolfowitzhisname. I would have loved for her to have said something like, 'When you talk about Wolfie, how else do you deal with the man that has been so wrong about so many things, including his girl-friend thing, who now believes that what we need is still more nuclear weapons on top of the thousands, or is it tens-of-thousands, that we already have? He's a joke and the more we try to make sure the country sees him as such, the better.

131. Rachel Maddow is a breath of fresh air.
An educated, articulate, intelligent, charming, gracious breath of fresh air. I actually enjoyed her dialogue with Frum (a man I loathe) because she directed the conversation, did not back down, and made sure that there was no yelling or interruptions. What a change from most talk shows!

I loved her comment to Frum re:Wolfowitz that since McSame's campaign has only made one person available to her **for 3 minutes** that she didn't hold out hope that Wolfowitz would come on her show. I LOVE that she made it plain that these people are simply unwilling, for whatever reason, to appear on her show.

Rachel, if you're reading this, WE LOVE YOU!!!!

143. I wrote to Rachel at MSNBC
Here's what I wrote to rachel@msnbc.com. I hope lots of people wrote in to support her!

Dear Rachel,

Thank you for keeping your cool and handling Frum's condescension with class and directness. What a pompous asshat! What a snob! Exactly what I have come to expect from the National Review.

This guy used to write speeches for GEORGE BUSH. He has no business pretending to be the serious "adult" on your show. He used to make his living spit-polishing turds for the dumbest (P)resident in the White House to regurgitate in public. He WISHES he had your brains and class.

I could not believe he had the temerity to ridicule you, his host, to your face, and obviously with no prior warning. I have never seen such rude behavior on a talk show by an invited guest - that's right, I don't watch Fox News. I was so proud of the way you went right after his false equivalences and knocked his arguments down to the ground and stomped on them. And then graciously thanked him for appearing on your show.

I would gladly kick this guy in the shins for you if it would give you any satisfaction. I know it would make ME feel a whole lot better.

the RIGHT WING TALK SHOWS have been fueling hate and negativism, making each of them millionaires and giving them name recognition, yet when a couple shows FINALLY make it on air dealing with facts that point out that the "right" has been messing up this country for years, THEN THEY DON'T LIKE HEARING SARCASM!

Frum, on the other hand, came across as an arrogant prick. Maybe he's one of the few neo-cons who actually sees the debasement of their party as a detriment, but they can't get that "liberal = bad" mantra out of their heads long enough to breath the clean air of a liberated mind. His "sophisticated" argument was nothing more than the adult version of a whiny, little boy saying "you did it too!!". My god, can't these people just go away? Anything to get away from their constant fuck-ups and refusal to take responsibility for the consequences.

Rachel is a true star - depth, integrity, and joyfulness all in one person.
