http://www.pensitoreview.com/2008/09/27/mccains-debate-performance-dominated-by-smirking-and-grinning/

The punditocracy has reached a consensus that the debate was a draw, and a few of these thought leaders are even suggesting that McCain won. If so, that’s a shame, because I found his performance to be appalling. Josh Marshall, said it this way, and I couldn’t agree more:

Whether it was contempt or condescension or some sort of fear or inability to — in the most literal sense — face Obama, it made McCain look small and angry. I apologize that I can’t link to them because I don’t remember who wrote it. But as someone wrote after the debate, for that kind of attitude to have ‘worked’ for McCain, Obama needed to come off as completely ignorant and unprepared. And I don’t think even his harshest critics believe that is what happened. Roll it all together and Obama just seemed like a bigger person than McCain. And in a race in which the issue agenda and party identification already work strongly in Obama’s favor, that’s an advantage that is very hard for McCain to give up.

5. I noticed the tip toe thing
I've seen it before and its rather odd looking, especially for an adult.

McCain's body language is really damning. Like Bush, he can't disguise his real feelings.

7. At 1:06 into the tape, he squints and looks like he's trying to see something in the distance, like
captain of a ship. I remember thinking last night, "What the hell is he doing?"

Anyone know?

3. They are saying he won or tied because
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 04:04 PM by Lifetimedem
He controlled the direction and topics of the debate..not because of his answers

It was Barack's job to turn the topic back on McCains face..

For an example.. McCain tried to blame the current problem on earmarks and Washington spending and barrack played right into it, by discussing that.

What he should have done is say this is a problem of a market that has had minimal or no oversight and extensive deregulation. He could have explained briefly the safeguards put in place after the depression have been gradually deregulated away and McCain PROUDLY BOASTS that he is the "biggest deregulator in Washington".

Instead barrack played on McCain's turf.. the winner of a debate is not the one with the best answers, but the one that controls the discussion.. no question MaCain did and won or tied on points.. even though Barrack looked better, more presidential , and had better answers.

His prep was not good IMHO

As for McCains faces.. they were intended to distract during OB's answers and they just made him look like a foolish old man

9. I think the person who wins the debate is the one who sways the most number of voters
Obama seemed to do better than McCain in the early polls of undecideds or independents. Pundits are too full of themselves with the way they choose to score things.

15. I agree in a general sense
But I think if Barack had controlled the debate it would have been a clear win, instead of a discussion on who won

Those that say that McCain won with a straight face are measuring with a debate tactic score, not the answers..

6. McCain was showing how small he really is. McCain was trying to show he was in a higher league than...
Obama and that Obama was too naive to be leader of this country in this tough world.

Instead he came off as rude, twitchy and disrespectful to a fellow senator.

Add to that his inappropriate freaky smile and you get one bad impression. And that doesn't even begin to address the fact that his frame of mind was in the past and that his grasp of foreign policy issues did not show any measurable difference to that of Obama's despite his years of experience.

11. Height
I know McCain is shorter - did all the TVs show them level at the head? If you watched, you could see his shoulders were higher than Barak's, but in some ways it seems like they're lying to us, in yet one more way.

Only this one is worse than the other, never thought I would say that, because this one thinks he is smart. I think George knows he is not and tries to cover it up with boyish charm. uggh. Just like a air head beauty queen does with girlish giggles. uggh again.
