A trio of journalists who have a track record of documenting police abuse at political conventions were stopped and searched during the early morning hours in Minneapolis. Police took their video equipment, cell phones, hard drive and notes about protests planned for next week's Republican National Convention.

No charges have been filed against the three, according to Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer.

4. Let's hope that they weren't naive enough to bring their ONLY COPIES of their notes, film and
contacts.

They've been documenting police abuse at conventions. Perhaps they learned a few lessons along the way.

The Gestapo is alive and well in Amerika. And they don't like exposure.

7. Same
My single word thought too, "fascism".

Sadly, we can neither get widespread recognition of this, nor democrats to try to put a stop to all the freedoms we've lost. All we seem to have is our vote, and it is questionable whether that is properly measured these days.

11. Unfortunately
for those on this thread that think these actions by MPD have something to do with the who is in the WH. I have news it is their common MO the only surprise is that they did not beat these guys senseless, that too is all to common for MPD. I lived in Minneapolis for 37 years and witnessed at least 5 separate beatings of cuffed suspects, including one where at least 6 officers turned their dogs on a suspect (homeless man) who was cuffed and stood around and cheered while the dogs tore this guy up. Try to report these incidents runaround does not describe it "do you have their badge numbers?" no it was dark but I have license plate numbers from their squad cars, nope not good enough BTW are you calling from home?
And for those planning to come to St Paul to protest the GOP. I have heard that St Paul is "borrowing" MPD officers for crowd control, I was far more secure about non-violence when I thought it was just St Paul cops who are far more "mellow" than Mpls.

19. For Shame
I dont give a fuck what happens to me on Sept 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th. My voice will be heard. Your voice must be heard right along with mine.

I will not give in to this fascist government. We have become a police state to the highest degree, and it will get nothing but worse with McCain. For all those NOT planning to protest, for SHAME. For all those who will "just let it play out" for SHAME.

Enough said.

22. The police and their actions are more
based on the area (state, county, and city) more than the country aren't they. I know our state police are okay (a little ify sometimes), most of our county sheriffs are more like Andy Griffin around this part of the state, and our city police can be anywhere from good to scary. Trust me, there are towns you don't fool around with the police or you may end up a little beat up.

by the way the link now takes you to an article that says their video equipment was returned to them and they are not being charged with anything. Don't know about their other stuff.

21. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since none of that "evidence" was collected legally
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 01:54 AM by file83
how can the Police think for one second that it can be used as evidence in court? (to support their claim that the "suspects" trespassed on some property)

Furthermore, if the Police observed that the "suspects" trespassed somewhere, then they don't need additional evidence, all they need to do is make the arrest and/or ticket.

They don't need to gather "evidence" and then let the "criminals" go (assuming the "suspects" were actually guilty).

The Police don't have the right to perform unlawful search and seizure. US Constitution 101.

Not Trespassers

UPDATE: Minneapolis police have returned video equipment to three journlists after seizing it earlier this week.
Police said there was no evidence the three had been tresspassing, which is the reason gave for taking the equipment.

Among the items taken by police in the name of homeland security: notes and data about groups planning to protest the Republican National Convention next week.

24. Oh! Well, then!
No harm, no foul!

"Oopsie! Here ya go! Here's your stuff back!

"What? No! I promise we didn't rifle through your papers to find out who we should illegally harass next!

"Silly protesters! "

Un-be-freakin'-lievable.

Wait, strike that. This is, unfortunately, all TOO believable. It's getting to the point where it's hardly even newsworthy - "Dog Bites Man".

31. Hold the horses.
They didn't say they gave the papers back did it? The only thing the article mentions is the video equiqment.

If they did give them back, I am sure they were copied and sent off to the appropriate people.

I am waiting for the "man bites dog" story when someone somehow makes a dent in the armour of the police state that the US has become.

26. I just wrote a post: Whether they like it or not, the police do work for us. Something needs to be d
And while this may not be police brutality, it's still abuse of power.
I am damn sick of this type of thing, and hope people call in and complain until something is done. To the cops, mayor, governor, FBI or congress.

Those same wonderful people putting Green Party folks and other "terrorists" on No-Fly lists, etc.?

29. New FISA Bill That DEMS Passed
Make all this perfectly legal. They can determine what is a threat to the public, investigate, confiscate and detain whenever, whatever and whomever they please and then explain it later, maybe. This is why this is my number 1 issue. I wish I could vent on the fuckin Pukes who made this possible but it was DEMS that allowed it. Aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!!!!!

30. And so even before the republicons begin their dirty little convention,
they trample on our 1st Amendment rights.

The police didn't harass them and take away their personal parers because they thought they were trespassing. They targeted these journalist in order to get information on the where, when, and who would be protesting the republicon's dirty little convention. The police were simply doing a reconnaissance mission to collect and study as much information as they can get.

How much do you want to bet that the people named in those journalist's personal papers will be added to the No Fly list and the FBI's lists.
