The smart thing to do would have been to say, "Yes I do believe in free speech, unlike McCain and his aide, that lied to a small elderly woman and said that the Secret Service ordered that she had to leave or she would be arrested for trespassing because she had a sign that said McCain=Bush." Of course he claims he "got roughed up a bit earlier", off camera. He needs to try to appear more dishevelled, though. That wasn't dramatic enough. He needs his hair messed up and his glasses skewed a bit to sell this "harassed and roughed up, poor, innocent reporter" storyline.
