Mardi Gras is in full swing this weekend, but this is what is really going on down there. I used to live there, in the ninth ward (Holy Cross), a block across from the river and in devastated St. Bernard parish. I moved away about a year before the storm, luckily, but I miss it everyday. This saddens and angers me more than I can put into words.

1. Just back from New Orleans
actually, Metarie, visited Mom for her 87th Birthday and the brief time I was there, was both hopeful and sad. It would be a huge job to rebuild a city with good leadership and of course we really don't have that. The tornadoes that went through last week were especially sad for the folks that were affected.

3. Agreed
She and my Sister were here for 3 weeks when it all happened and have had some difficult times along the way, but overall have come out well. Just the luck of the draw and which way the wind and water went. They both know they were lucky and we are thankful.

5. I know all about the luck of the draw.
I moved away in the nick of time and not by choice (illness in the family), sometimes i think i have a form of survivor's guilt. I really am happy your family is safe and decided to stay.

4. Heartbreaking. I'm so sorry and ashamed.
What in the hell is going on in Congress? They need to vote a resolution to "Restore the Gulf".
This is insane- like the woman said, this doesn't seem like America.

9. Louisiana Democrats are a strange breed.
Mary Landrieu is a good example.

10. So does anyone think that New Orleans will return to normal
with the same population demographics before and the same culture or is it a lost cause?

My heart really goes out for New Orleans and I wish that there was some way that I could put it back together.

Well, one can only dream.

12. I hated that the older man in the truck thought that the Mississippi
governor (Republican with strong ties to Bush) was doing a good job while the Louisiana Democratic governor was not. It's clear to me that the Republicans gave money to Mississippi BECAUSE the governor was Republican. They withheld it from Louisiana BECAUSE the governor and Senator Landreau are Democrats. The next governor of Louisiana will probably be a Republican and the Landreau will probably be replaced with a Republican. That is the Bush-Rove plan and I think it may work.
