Smellcrapometers across the blogosphere are pushing into the red.

From The Political Carnival Blog and Daily Kos: "I report, you decide. Transcript from the forum last night here.

It just sounded so fake and so contrived, so I did a little research about it. Someone on here said it sounded like a scene from Ben-Hur, so I did a google search about Ben-Hur and cross in the sand and such. No dice. But I searched around a little bit more and here is what I found. A story about Alexander Solzhenitsyn from his times in the Soviet Gulags.

(snip)

As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work.

As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible.

Excerpted from "The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, three volumes published 1973–1978.

Padlock! YOu are doing a GREAT job! I was already well into drinking mode when I checked in last night, and couldn't believe what a sham the Forum was. McCain was clearly prepped and well-memorized, My Friend

The entire thing made me livid.

This "story" of his looks plagiarized to me. When I get home, I'll talk to you more.

Excellent post. Excellent comments. I miss being with you guys.

Huh. That sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? McCain made a Christmas ad about his "cross in the sand moment," and I believe the ad said it happened at Christmas time. Can you find that ad? I'm just curious b/c he left that part TOTALLY out last night.

Yup, I found it--this supposedly happened at Christmas time. Clearly, he revises this story to get the cross in the sand moment into just about all of his discussions."

1. Was there 'sand' at the Hanoi Hilton? A fellow prisoner could answer that.

4. BLASPHEMY is the right word.
McCain borrows the concept from Alexander Solzhenitsyn. The idea of drawing The Cross in sand as a gesture of hope. we know from McCain's statements in 1973 that such a thing did not happen.

As a lie, this is blasphemy. An example of Evil.

6. Well Well McCain did say he wanted to follow someone to the gates of hell!
So I guess his rampant blasphemy is a way to end this wah on tewa once and for all! He probably has a living will requiring that he should not be revived if he is unconscious.
