At the Saddleback Civil Forum, Barack Obama addressed his definition of marriage.

While he said he believes that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, he also said that he would not support a Constitutional definition of marriage as so.

His argument is that marriage has not been defined by the federal government, traditionally. He said that it is up to the states to decide

1. Nice safe answer. What would happen to his chances if he . . .
Just said -- in the same calm tones -- that any pair of adults willing to pledge lifelong committment should be allowed to marry?

Would it put him over the top or kill his campaign?

2. In a previous speech, he strongly suggested he'd favor a Federal Civil Union.

As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination. And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.

Barack Obama pledges to repeal DOMA and to end the plague of anti-gay ammendments

3. I wish someone would discuss real christianity
and how christ would have viewed the desire of two people to marry. He would have never promoted judgment or denial of the right to love another human being, so long as no one was hurt in the doing. it just isn't any of our business -- just like it isn't any of our business in a hetero marriage who the partners are.

It doesn't strike me as Christian at all to judge and wish to deny others of love and comfort. Is this really about building christian armies through having children? because that is not striking me as christ-like.

butt out of other people's private lives! how judgmental and arrogant. of course two people who choose to marry should be able to marry. what century is this?

and no, it isn't anyone's business. it's ridiculous that this has to be such an issue and people have to fight for this right. with all that's wrong in the world, someone else's choices are what these folks are focused on? Get a life. Now, live and let live, that would be PRO LIFE.

8. exactly
how hypocritical

and how bout the phrase remove the log from your own eye before you focus on the sliver in mine (or whatever that saying is) -- basically, tend to your own moral and spiritual health and let your neighbor take care of their own.

all of this simply strikes me as so anti-christian, so the opposite of true love and spirituality. No loving god or spiritual leader would encourage denying love and comfort to their people. The more love we give and receive here, the more generous and caring we are toward others, toward the planet, toward animals...and the more we see and feel the presence of a unifying force. It's quite simply ridiculous thinking -- and so self-righteous. I've never found self-righteousness to be a trait indicating tolerance and love....just a few of the things jesus stood for.

4. How pitiful that patriarchal Christians can get together to keep patriarchy intact ---
while suggesting it's something that some guy in the sky wants --- !!!

Who would think that we might have serious issues to face . . . like Global Warming,
fascism, warmongering --- atomic weapons --- and male violence?

9. yes
your post was a really important one--- male violence in this country has reached appalling levels. Men like bush and McCain only contribute more to the image of the patriarchal male whose little woman takes all his crap and keeps her mouth shut. While you see that often in self-labeled christians, it isn't my understanding or any pastor with half a brain's understanding of the bible. How could we ever be in "god's image" when we deny rights and do not honor fully half of the species because of their ability to create/give birth? instead of trying to control this, it could be honored in all of its forms (creativity). No, we're a society of scared patriarchs, control and dominance is important. supress the minorities, the women, anyone who could rise up and take over.

the rest of humanity will rise up and when they do, the world will be a better place. a more humane place. when these self-labeled christians speak, do they not get the irony? they are the people stoning jesus as he struggled with the cross. they are the haters, the judgers, the hurters. it's people like bush and mc cain who turned reasonable people away from religion. they are both burning with the fever of the righteous; translation, the unevolved with no inner sense of the spirit who must rely on written words because they have no sense of right and wrong inside of them.

was it just me, or did anyone else's skin crawl while watching mc cain? He's the opposite of enlightened. He is darkness and death to me. Very scary man.

perspective -- a perspective which tells them that patriarchy sells and advances them in
positions of control -- it works for them --- !!

And too many believe the myth and don't see thru it ---

11. Guess hypocrite Obama wasn't invited to Ellen & Portia's wedding
Civil rights for his people, but not for gays. Nice. Should black's right to marry whites have been left up to the states too?

On the bright side, Ellen and Portia tied the knot yesterday:
