3. Lol! I was thinking the same thing
I only spend about a half hour or so a day in the gym. If I brought it up to and hour, or two...well hey, at least I'd probably not put that ONE slice of pizza directly onto my hips!

20. I was a competitive swimmer in HS/College, Second highest average VO2
of any athletics.

I stayed under 7% until I was 28... without ever having to do more than moderate activity. While swimming, at peak season, I was barely 4% and taking in over 7,000 cal/day.

Phelps is a bigger, better machine than I ever was, he burns three people's daily caloric intake just sleeping.

Swimming rocks.

27. I think physiologically, Phelps is the best built human in modern times, for swimming that is.
He's just amazing, and has such a good attitude and heart.

2 Things

1)-Cenk is not, and has never claimed to be, a "reporter". He's a talk show host (and former lawyer but that's irrelevant) and he's very clear about that.

2)-What's your problem? If you have one, please explain it so we can have a reasonable disagreement. Spouting off poorly explained personal insults doesn't qualify.

PS---This tiny segment was in the third hour of the show, the part where they lighten things up and talk about current events, entertainment, etc. It wasn't meant to be a hard hitting piece (I thought that was obvious).

11. Was I vague? Cenk is an idiot.
His reports are frequently featured here and he's been an idiot since the posts here started. How has he ever been, in any capacity, worthy of attention?

He's sensationalistic, he has no camera presence, and he's substantially illiterate.

He's a poor voice for Democrats.

14. Well YOU can call him an idiot, but he's been helpful to me
numerous times, in understanding some of the issues. Presenting them so they're bite-sized enough for me. So I for one appreciate what he brings.

15. Say what you will
But I'm betting your in the minority with your assessment of Cenk. I really like the guy. Reporters are fine, they tell you what's happened and do so in a fairly sterile fashion. Cenk and Olberman take the stuff reporters report and squeeze the incredulous and the ironic out of it. I love it!

Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 02:27 AM by CherylK
I think some people are just jealous to be honest, and maybe they have no sense of humor. Cenk is very, very funny so some people can not take him seriously. I know people who do not like Jon Stewart of Colbert for this reason which is nutso. Well I will take them all any day over someone who bores me to sleep! If someone can make me laugh AND inform me they have earned my respect.

Cenk, I love ya. :loveya:

19. Sorry, but I'm inclined to agree
It seems that we're so desperate to find someone who agrees with us that we're willing to latch on to almost anyone whose views vaguely resemble our own. We can do better than Cenk, but then, beggars can't be choosers.

23. The bottom line
is that there is a place for a NUMBER of progressive voices.

There is no one perfect progessive voice that ALWAYS gets it right. The real strength and power comes from listening (and reading and watching) to a wide variety of voices and perspectives and digging out the best that each has to offer.

How can you argue that Cenk is not a strong progressive voice after watching this clip(?): http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/07/03/cenk-uygur-defends-wes-clarks-statement-on-cnn/

Say what you will about him, but if nothing else he does an excellent job of being tough and forceful (something the Dems are in absolute desparate need of and we all know it). That and he manages to distill complicated issues in ways that makes them easy to understand and remember, and that's incredibly important if the goal is to expand the message beyond the die-hard base.

32. OK. How about...
  • Van Jones
  • Naomi Klein
  • Paul Rogat Loeb

    just for starters

I guess my bigger beef is not so much with Cenk as it is with the general dumbing down and trivializing of discourse. In 2004, more people interviewed on the streets of San Francisco (San Francisco!) were passionate and informed about the upcoming American Idol vote than they were about the Presidential election.
I mean, what the F does Michael Phelps' diet have to do with anything anyhow?

    35. Listen
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 12:16 AM by ihavenobias
I think people can be well rounded. We don't need to spend every second of every day talking HARD politics and serious issues.

Of course we should spend SOME of our day discussing these relevant topics (far too many people spend NO time talking about anything other gossip and BS), but I think it's also fine and even important to decompress, de-stress and lighten up. That's what the THIRD HOUR of the show is for (the first 2 hours tackle the complexities of foreign and domestic policy, etc.).

Anyone that would judge a 3 hour show based on tiny snippets of youtube clips from the entertainment hour is not making a sound judgment.

And again, there is room for LOTS of different progressive voices. Not everyone wants incredibly dry information machines. In fact, most of the people we need to reach would be bored to tears and would fall asleep and ignore some of the progressive voices you likely hold dear.

As for me, I like a balance. Thom Hartmann is incredibly dry and informative, and I love him for it. Cenk is informative but also fun and entertaining, and I love him in a different way. In the end it's different strokes for different strokes.

PS---Naomi Klein was on The Young Turks a few months or so ago and it was a good interview. I'm glad to see that Naomi is a little more open minded than others who dismiss Cenk. ;)

    22. You're being inflammatory for no good reason
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 02:16 AM by ihavenobias
You're not providing any specific examples, you're just preaching to people who already share your opinion.

Great, you don't find his particular style interesting. I'm sure you've based that on his actual show and his articles rather than some youtube clips (and by sure I mean I'm sure you haven't). And judging by the fact that he's respected enough to have guests like Robert Borsage, Thom Hartmann and Rachel Maddow on his show (and that he's given some great speeches for YearlyKos/Netroots among others) I'd say you're very much in the minority.

PS---It's absurd to judge his take on politics based on some youtube clips taken from the third hour of the show which rarely involves politics (again, it's on entertainment, etc. and is lighthearted). That'd be like someone watching Olbermann's entertainment stories later in the show and concluding that he's a "illiterate fuck" because he talked about Paris Hilton, cracked a couple of jokes and so on.

    :)

    12. The thing that is mentioned in a cursory fashion is...
...that he trains a lot. I tell my "overweight" friends that if they exercise regularly, they could probably end up eating more than they currently do and probably lose weight. I eat a lot of calories (fairly close to the amount of food that Cenk lists, but no red meat, pork nor eggs) and my weight and body shape hasn't changed much since high school. And I'm not really a health nut, either; I just tend to avoid the stuff that is really bad for you.

It's all about burning more calories than you consume. Sitting on your butt for several hours every day usually won't help to accomplish that.

    21. Yep. Eating less won't do it.
Once active, most people can eat the same or more and lose weight.

Calories in < Calories burned = weight loss.

    31. True
I have periodically gone stretches of time when I exercised up to two hours per day. I found I could consume 4500 cals per day with no weight gain at all. Yet when I cut the exercise down I gained weight even eating 3000 cals. (I'm a 6 ft tall male w/a large frame, so that makes a big difference too). It's all about the exercise, exercise, exercise.
