1. there were better alternatives than surge. It got over 2000more soldiers killed unnecessarily.
It protected and enabled contractor profiteering, while performing ethnic cleansing, segregation and displacement of Sunnis. The insurgency resulted from Bremmer firing the Iraq army, putting the entire country out of work to make way for American contractors profiteering. As soon as Sunnis were rehired (paid) to fight al qaeda and the criminal militias which sprang up also as a result of firing the Iraq army, violence against US forces and Iraqis went down immediately and the surge could have been replaced with re-employing the Iraq army and letting Iraqi contractors rebuild Iraq putting the country back to work again. Bremmer even fired their teachers, doctors, closed their factories making them dependent on the US so they could maximize their profiteering.

The "surge" (troop escalation) was unnecessary and might have prevented the deaths of 2000more soldiers except for Bush's incompetent decisions. There were alternative policies that would have been effective in producing political reconciliation, reducing violence and saving lives...but profits were more important. It was used to better police and control a civil war we were instigating with incompetent policies. Nuking the country would have brought violence down also...but at what costs...same with the surge...it helped violence go down but at a huge cost.
