I do not think most liberals would ever admit to having those feelings sometimes.

7. The first step
Conservatives are proud of having those feelings; liberals would never admit to them, and true progressives will admit it and try hard to change that about themselves.

6. I grew up knowing people who moved here from Syria
and Lebanon. So I didn't have it built into me at any early age and any attempt at teaching me hate later would of course fail. Also, I knew several Iranians in college before all the current stuff (before 1980) and thus attempts at collective blame and hate failed on people like me as well. But I know plenty of people without my life experiences and they have definitely been taught to hate. Thanks for posting.

12. During our war against the people of Serbia
I put out on a couple of Serbian websites that I wished to be "adopted" as a penpal by someone in Serbia.

One person replied. We began a six month correspondance. He was charming, warm and of course terribly affected by the fact that his country was under the wrath of our missiles. The economy there was so vastly disturbed by our war actions that he moved to Vienna so that he could make money there and send it back to his family. And of course, five years before, it would have been unthinkable to him that he would ever need to do go into exile.

He had about as much responsibility/guilt for the ethnic cleansing happening in his country as I have for what happened Abu Gharib.

After a while we lost touch.

I still wonder where he is and what is going on with him. I am not a person who believes in this country, in the sort of rah rah way that the neo cons would demand. I am a Buddhist (sort of) and I have more affinity for the Dalai Lama and his instructions than for any actions our country does or doesn't take against people in other lands.

9. Yes, everyone can be conditioned to hate.
I have to tell you, though, I did not have the same first thought that they had.
I just thought that the video of dancing was beautiful.

10. Upbringing matters, but its about our cultural vernacular as well.
I don't think you can escape childhood without prejudice and consider yourself safe from the kind of brainwashing they are talking about, because it works its way into our language and our political dialogue. Think of how the world terrorist has subtly changed definition over the last 8 years.

I grew up in a few different countries and as a teenager, my roomate was Lebanese, while the guys next door were an Israeli and a Palestinian living together, we had Saudis, Pakistanis, Indians, everybody, and we all learned to live together and really did learn how little our nationalities mattered. I know that sounds a bit cheesy, but its true.

And after a few years of participating in American political discourse, I get these same flashes in my head, when someone says Saudi: Bin Laden, &c. I am totally resistant to it, and reject any notion of pigeonholing someone because of their ethnicity or roots, but still it's there.

Why do we need to hate? What is the point of this systematic brainwashing? It serves the purposes of the govt and their corporate rulers, thats all, otherwise we might look at the actions of Blackwater and Halliburton and the oil companies who are back in Iraq and say; "Wait just a goddamn minute, these people have fucking rights too!"
