1. After these last @ 8 years this seems wistfully quaint.
Our foreign policies are so much more corrupt and national interest is not even considered. We barely have a foreign policy that pertains to our nation. Corporate lobbyists and delusional republican wanks have hijacked what was left of our national public welfare.

We actually had a semblance of dignity, integrity, and respect for international relations then.

2. Absolutely
"National interest" now means nothing more than the interest of corporate welfare. What is naive now if I may be so bold is believing in the nation state at all.

4. One big missing piece to this analysis...
...exactly what is being protected for whom? The term "in our national interests" only works as long as citizens believe that they share in these interests. A more accurate term might be "in our corporate interests" or the policy is "in the interest of the top 100 largest corporations".

I doubt that would go over so well, though would be a lot closer to the truth when it comes to US Government Policy.

5. Two books talk about this beautifully ...
Both are by John Perkins:

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
The Secret History of the American Empire
