1. As if I needed another reason to not vote for McCain!
Wrong on Iraq, wrong on health care, wrong on taxes and is horrible to his wives on top of it.

3. I don't know how I feel about that avenue of attack
What McCain did was pretty sleazy, but I tend to think that kind of thing should be personal. All that should be necessary to beat McCain is to play tapes of him contradicting himself time and again on foreign policy, his signature issue. YouTube is his worst enemy. There's really no need to get into his personal life, no matter how despicable it might be.

4. I had this discussion with a friend of mine earlier today
Look, in a perfect world I totally agree. People would be well informed and would vote and make decisions based on policy differences, *relevant* policy differences.

Sadly, most people are not well informed (and or are misinformed) and they DO vote based on BS.

But considering McCain is running for the party that stands for "Family Values", and considering his voting record (and the record of his party) on people's sex lives (who you can sleep with, who you can and can't marry, what you can do with your body, if insurance should cover your birth control, etc.), I DO think it's somewhat relevant to let these values voters know that Mr. Conservative may not appreciate people judging HIS personal decisions, despite the fact that he and his party have a mission to judge everyone else's.

I think there is some merit, in that context, to making these things a *small* part of the discussion.

Do I think someone should vote or not vote for McCain based solely on this story or the story about him calling his current wife a "trollop" and a "cunt" in public? No, honestly I don't. I'd hope that they wouldn't vote for him because his policy proposals are terrible on a number of levels, and that at best this serves as the icing on the cake.

PS---If nothing else, I consider this to be a potentially useful line of attack to use with family and friends who insist that McCain is dead right on policy and that Obama is dead wrong. When they throw out the latest Obama Smear that relies on *false* information (i.e. he's Muslim, etc.) you can respond with this. Just something to consider anyway.

5. Great strategy
Yeah, let's play it nice and refuse to hit our opponent with everything we've got. Meanwhile, the GOP will be calling Michelle Obama a traitor, and taking everything she says out of context, hinting that there's porno in her past, or that she's a racist, America-hating terrorist sympathizer. But we're going to remain "above all that', and refuse to fight back against the smears. Yeah, that worked out so well for President Kerry, dinnit?

Face it, as Molly Ivins liked to say, "politics ain't beanbag".

If they put one of our guys in the hospital, we put one of theirs in the morgue"

7. John Kerry
After his spineless appearance on Sunday, I don't want to ever see Kerry again. I voted for him but he let asshole Lindsey make him a fool and refused to fight back. I say hit them with everything including the kitchen sink.

21. Why is going personal the only way to counter GOP lies?
Isn't it enough to point out that the Republicans are making shit up? Wouldn't Obama have more credibility in rebuffing those kinds of attacks if he maintained the appearance of being above those tactics?

The proper answer to swiftboating is "you are lying," and doesn't necessarily include "your guy is a scumbag because of x, y, and z."

22. You'd have a relevant point *if* it was Obama that was talking about Mccain's personal life
but he isn't.

Obama is correctly staying above the fray, which is the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, there are countless millions out there who don't respond well to logic and reason and require appeals to emotion and more personal stories. It's the same reason the GOP is already going for the ugly, Willie Horton style ads to imply that Obama is a Muslim who can't be trusted, etc.

Yes, point out these are lies is great and is being done, but many people simply don't listen to reason. The listen to a juicy personal nugget that they believe (and there might be *some* merit to that idea, if only a little) reflects McCain's character. This is especially relevant for "values voters" who struggle with the idea of voting for a pro-choice candidate.

And again, McCain and his party love to promote and pass legislation that passes judgment on the personal lives of others, so in that context it's more appropriate IMO to bring up his personal life.

17. I disagree with that
only because I do think how a person acts in their personal life does affect how they will legislate. McCain is obviously abusive towards women; that should frighten off even female Republican voters with self-respect. He doesn't respect the small or the weak...that definitely bodes ill for him in a position of power. We've had enough of an abusive pResident.

11. The Perot quotes are important to get out there
Many conservatives and independents still look up to Ross Perot. The fact that he footed the bills for Carol after the accident adds to his credibility. His comments about McCain will be taken seriously if people know about them, I think.

This is great stuff. The whole "wife" business is unfortunate however... If McCain actually used that
term with his wife, the "c" word, and it's around, then that's an issue. Nevertheless, this is fascinating.

As for "Willie" - we're in a new world.

How many people were born after 1973?
How many after 1966?

I'd say that those people are much less likely to have a special sympathy for McCain than
older voters.

The under 40 crowd has a different outlook on everything. It's going to be a rokken election
and they'd better plan to steal a lot of votes because TURNOUT is the name of this game. It
cancels out many of the marginal forms of election fraud (you heard it here first) and raises
the ante quite a bit.
