I remember when this happened shortly after the war started. I was out there on the streets of San Francisco that night, and things did get pretty crazy at times. But most of the day things had been peaceful, and all day long this reporter for the local Fox affiliate (KTVU) had been warning people to stay away from the protests, not to bring their kids, that it was dangerous, yadda yadda ya. All of it was over done of course, and only added to the protesters' anger that night. One of them finally had had enough of the media's blatant cheerleading for the war and one-sidedness and gave her a nice cream pie in the face. Heh, heh.

But you know, when I look at this, I realize how far we've come. The media is still full of shit, but they no longer portray us as fringe wackos with the same frequency that they used to. Too bad it took 3,000 U.S. troops and 650,000 Iraqi lives to make it happen. Anyway, enjoy.

1. I was right there too..
I remember the commotion with that newsbabe, but I didn't know she got a pie.

That was a very tense night on Market Street. I came real close to getting arrested about 8 different times.

for crossing the street after the police had barricaded it off. A lot of people are opposed to aggressive protesting. I myself have mixed feelings about it, but I'll say this, that night was the only time in my life I have ever seen the system afraid, and that showed me how powerful we really can be when we rise up. At that point they realized they could no longer control the people, and it terrified the shit out of them. In many ways I found that far more powerful than all of the other "peaceful" protests I've gone to where we essentially had to ask the powers that be where we can go to march and at what times and in what locations. Not that ultimately I don't think peace is the way to go, but there is something to be said for a little in your face defiance now and again.

2. I heard someone in the crew call out after the pie in the face:
"CALL 911!!"

I can hear the exchange now....
"911 here... what is the nature of your emergency?"
"One of our reporters was assaulted by anti war protesters!!"
"Is she bleeding?"
"No... but we're gonna need a make-up kit and hair spray stat!!"

10. The reporter was correct when she called the pie-thrower a "coward"
She demanded that he "show his face", but all the pie-thrower did was run away.

FOX News is lower than maggots on a garbage can lid, but the reporter was correct on the "coward" part.

13. Yeah? Considering how violent right wingers are
I think he showed a lot of courage.

That was one righteous pie throw.

(I especially liked her one yap about all the disorder in the streets that showed just one guy in the background, going about his business.)

May it happen to all Pox News harpies and asswipes.

12. What a phony biased report....I would not at all be surprised if the
...pie attack on Jenifer Jellybean was completely staged. Fox News and the World Wrestling Network are basically cut from the same cloth

14. KTVU
I haven't watched KTVU in a while. They used to have a great news team. They were in existence long before Fox news. Fox bought them, and mostly they play Fox entertainment shows with very little Faux News.

I remember that as a whole all the local coverage of the protests was gawd-awful and biased. Day after day we got stories of people acting badly. The KGO talk hosts were particularly bad. I pointed out to my coworker at the time, "We've invaded another country, and all these guys can talk about is a few people in SF with weapons in a huge crowd of protestors."

17. Yeah, I grew up watching them
I was one of those weird kids that watched the news. I had a crush on Leslie Griffith, who has recently left the station, and rumor has it it's because she's none too happy about the direction the news business is going in. They lost their other star anchor, Elaine Corral, in the later 90's. Booth of them left very suddenly and before they could be seriously be called too old to do it anymore. Me thinks something none too pleasant has been going on at KTVU for some time now.

15. Normally, I would oppose this treatment of the opposition.
However, after seeing the clips juxtaposed with her yammering about how "violent" it was (scene pans to a street shot with one guy doing a bit of street dancing and waving at the camera), and how close it was coming to the violent riots of the Vietnam era, (cut to scene of groups of people walking calmly down the street) - I think the idiot deserved it.

16. In my experience the reports of protester violence are almost always
overblown. There's a great video somewhere of Portland media giving coverage of some protests that turned "violent" because according to the media, a protester threw a bottle. But the makers of this video had obtained exclusive police video of the event, and it clearly shows no bottle being thrown but rather the police standing around debating with themselves about how to spray the crowd with pepper spray. Eventually they move in and hose them down with the shit, even though the crowd was being completely non-violent. Wish I could find it again but I haven't been able to.

Violence at protests is usually one of two things, it's a small isolated group of people out of a huge crowd and it's usually not nearly as bad as the media says it is, or it's an outright lie on the part of the media to discredit the protesters and justify police overreaction. I mean, supposedly Jennifer Jolly had been out filming this chaos all day, and yet she had no footage of it. She says, "As you can see right now, there is chaos in the streets," and the camera pans around, and everything is completely calm. Yeah, what a war zone.
