War Pigs by Black Sabbath is one of 1,000 anti-war songs banned by Clear Channel radio network during the Iraq War

Iraq War Pigs {WARNING: GRAPHIC}
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LC7BfgknY4

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction

In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'til their judgement day comes

Now in darkness world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour

Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pig's crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
oh lord yeah!

2. Me Too !
I was listening to Black Sabbath when I was fifthteen years old and war pigs was one of my favorites . I was lucky to grow up in a time when some of the most talented musicians/song writers where around ,the Beatles and the Stones of course ,the great Led Zeplin,Deep Purple,Alice Cooper, Jehro Tull, Lenyard Skynard the Who and the list goes on and on ! I get a kick when I hear that some of the kids are still listening to these classic greats. Once and awhile a band will come along that can make the grade to have their music played along side of these guys ,I cant tink of their name however a band no longer together after the leader commited suicide a band from Seattle Wa. is up there and its a shame just when that band was becoming well known the viocalist and song writer killed himself over an apperant drug habit ! Can anyone think of the name for me ? Thanks

Take Care ,Nick

3. Nirvana or Alice In Chains?
Both pillars of the "grunge movement" both singers incredibly tragic. I met and chatted briefly with Jerry Cantrell, (guitarist for Alice In Chains) about Layne Staley(sp?). Cantrell turned out to be a heck of a nice guy who was deeply concerned with his friend Staley's drug addiction. He said that Layne was struggling and at that point had lost most of his front teeth due to his addiction, that his concerned friends were doing what they could to keep him housed, clothed and fed. Cantrell agreed with me that Layne had a powerful voice and should not be replaced should the band, (at the time), get back together, something Cantrell very much wanted to see happen. Layne Staley passed away a few months later.

We are of a similar age NicR, I may be but a year older. I was in Europe when Black Sabbath took off. I bought their second album, the one with War Pigs and Iron-man and Paranoid and etc on it shortly after it's release, perhaps in '69 or '70. War Pigs was especially important to me because I knew deep inside that the Viet Nam War was a fiasco, much like we the Iraqi war is a fiasco today.
Concerts were about 2-3 dollars there and in quick succession I got to see: Pink Floyd, Humble Pie, The Groundhogs, Colosseum, Ten Years After, Jethro Tull, The Who, Grand Funk Railroad, Golden Earring, Tangerine Dream, (both in small clubs) Elton John, Rod Stewert and the Faces and many more I have long forgotten.

My personal passion for music eventually wound me up being a photographer working with the local music scene in the Seattle Tacoma area mid way through the Grunge movement (which is why I got to meet Jerry Cantrell). Like most artists I love to show off and toot my own horn, something I did here in the DU Photography forum a year or so ago:

Eventually I grew to old to be hanging around with these talented kids and their fervent followers but I am grateful for the experience...I would have to say that Black Sabbath and particularly the song War-Pigs is what set me off down that road.

4. You listed to Sabbath in 69, I was born in 69!
:hippie: ...it's like the t-shirt reads, Black Sabbath Ruined My Life. My older sister turned me onto them as a young kid, and naturally some yrs later when I began playing in garage/bar bands, we played Sabbath covers, and much of our original material was derivative of their early sound, along with the likes of Blue Cheer, Randy Holden, Cream, etc, and a small handful of underground 80s bands that were blatantly waving their Sabbath freak flag, such as Saint Vitus, Candlemass, The Obsessed, and Pentagram. As I got older I discovered that there was this entire "stoner/doom metal" genre that I had grown up listening to, unaware that the niche even had its own classification - all due to pioneers, Black Sabbath.

That genre is bigger today than ever {Electric Wizard, Sleep, Om, Acid King, YOB, Wall of Sleep, Pale Divine, Toner Low, it's a very long list}, largely due to the cohesive properties of the web bringing kindred spirits in touch with one another, shows, records {most of the bands I listen to still release vinyl records along with cd}, new bands, recently released archive materials, etc

You'll appreciate this. Back in the 90s, my old band did a gig with this band, Alice donut. Check out their comical rendering of War Pigs! {the drummer and vocalist switch spots for this one}

5. I remember seeing the flyers and adds for Alice Donut...
...but never had the pleasure of seeing them or hearing any of their material. That link was the first time I have listened to them. Talanted and an interesting version of Warpigs indeed. Every now and again I see their discs at pawn shops. I think I'll have to snag one next time I see it.

I confess that my early years were more into Metal AND Prog Rock: Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, a little later, Yes. Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull were my other mainstays early on too. All these decades later it pleases me to no end that many of these bands influenced the industry so strongly.

I suspect I will be sharply disagreed with by many my age but imo, of those bands from my own youth, I would have to say that Black Sabbath had the most influence on the industry, (which follows with what you say). I swear I hear Black Sabbath's influence in most heavy rock and folks are still dressing in black with metal studs and ankhs and etc. all these decades later!

An interesting aside, a few of my German friends back in the early '70s thought Fairies Wear Boots to be the best song on Black Sabbath's second album. I am not sure, but I don't think it was on the early versions of the American release. A great song but for me it was always Warpigs. Those lyrics, (which I had wrong for years and years- "...treating people just like 'poker chips'"), that poignant yet POWERFUL guitar and those syncopated drums!!! I have seen OZZY often enough over the years, love his material but I especially love it when he does Warpigs or Paranoid.

Sorry for the lengthy ramblings.

10. Classic - didn't Buddy Miles die recently?
I have a friend who met him while running a t-shirt printing outfit for some of those classic rockers still doing to the fairgrounds circuit. Apparently he had some choice photographs from this one time only Band of Gypsy's performance which he traded off for a very small amount of whichever drug he was into at the time, crack or crank. Sad to see.
