From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson's life—his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell's Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. Narrated by Johnny Depp.

5. K and R
I was saddened, but not surprised when Dr. Thompson blew his brains out 3 years ago. Suicide is selfish... among other things. I wish he were around today to chronicle the madness.

I'll see the film. I want to learn more about the fun, fear and loathing he endured and enjoyed aiming at... and sometimes going over the edge.

11. I think it is more selfish
to not let someone make the decision of how and when they will go out.

8. The on-again-off-again Rum Diary project seems to be back on the shelf.
I'm hoping the movie gets through production this time.
The Rum Diary is a bit uneven but provides an early glimpse into the brilliant mind of HST.

9. I have his "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" in Audible.com format.
I just listened to it for the second time a few days ago. For anyone interested, his "The Rum Diary" is also listed at Audible.com. I may give that a listen too.

But I most certainly get that "Gonzo" film, when it comes out in DVD!

14. Hunter S. Thompson changed my life
I made the decision to switch my major from law to journalism after reading Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72 my sophomore year. After that his work became a major influence on my life, in many ways.

Hunter was one of the greatest english prose writers of the last 100 years, if not THE greatest, IMO. Among many other things, he taught me the invaluable lesson that all communication is subjective. He also had one of the most finely attuned bullshit detectors in journalism. Above all he valued Truth.

I put HST in the same category as Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Kerouac. RIP Hunter. We miss you.
