1. Any Spanish speakers here that can provide a critique?
That sounded like he pulled that off pretty well to me, but I'm not really in a position to judge properly since I can barely speak a word of Spanish. How'd he do?

14. I speak a little Spanish.
Okay, I speak a lot of Spanish, but not quite enough to be considered bilingual.

Barack did okay. His accent wasn't bad at all. I hope he gets extra marks for effort. He has to have practiced-- Spanish consonants are very different from English ones. It took me 4 or 5 years to properly learn how to roll an "r," even though my mom is a native-speaker and a Spanish teacher.

23. You know he practiced and the Puerto Ricans will
appreciate that..I know I would. I lived in San Diego for 15 years and I think his accent sounds really good for the amount of time Obama's had.

27. THIS IS HISTORIC, name one US President that ever spoke Spanish even for 30 seconds
Edited on Wed May-28-08 02:06 PM by Heather MC
All other presidents have only spoken english, and I think JFK butchered a German saying once.
This was awesome. I know people who speak spanish in my area, area are always suprized and happy I know how to greet in spanish,
that's all I can do, yah, 10th grade spanish class 100 years ago!

29. Obama's whole campaign is historic..you're so right!
And, I'm impressed by this video 'cause I saw one the other day with Obama reading his Espanol from cards kinda on the fly so you know he took some time.

Thank you, Puerto Rico, for considering voting for Obama!

34. George W Bush unfortunately.
I remember it from right before the election in 2000. It was an atrocious appearance with his nephew George P Bush (whose Spanish isn't perfect either). That felt like pandering to me. Here it is apparent that Obama addresses the "island" issues that he knows are a problem in Puerto Rico and comes off a little more like he knows what he's talking about.

44. Obama's enunciation is "spot on" BETTER than the Chimperors.
Edited on Thu May-29-08 09:51 AM by ShortnFiery
I'm impressed. When I lived in Panama and worked with a native speaker, my Spanish Classes (U of Nebraska) did not help much in the area of pronunciation. This is important! My native friend warned me that "I looked Latino" but if I were caught in a riot to just go with the crowd and say *NOTHING.* His point: I did not SOUND like a native speaker.

Listen to this again and pay particular attention to Obama's "attention to detail" in getting the pronunciation correct?

He's GOOD. I do think that the good Puerto Rican People will be impressed. :-)

8. Its good!
:-)... but what you said is that the video "looks" very special... as if its looking at someone... Mirar and ver are not interchangeable as "look" is in English "Bush looks at the chimp, and Bush looks like a chimp" Two different words in Spanish. "Bush mira al chimp" and "Bush se ve como un chimp." Sorry to be your Spanish teacher ;-)

10. Muchas Gracias, Senor!
I knew enough to know that "mira" was probably not right but I went ahead 'cause I'm fearless when trying to learn and that's one wayB-)

So we would say.."Este video se ve muy Especial"?

Chimps are smarter, though.

24. We only learn by participating and doing...
Edited on Wed May-28-08 01:27 PM by heliarc
I think that's right! :)

I'm the child of exiles and they made it a habit of speaking English at home... so they could survive here.

I learned what I could of the Spanish language from old songs, so my grammar is pretty bad too. I understand almost everything, but have a hard time speaking it.

I always found it hard to learn languages cause everyone is always correcting you. I learned too late that most are just trying to help you learn.

5. Not bad.
Edited on Wed May-28-08 12:14 PM by heliarc
I'm a little concerned that this will be heckled. His pronunciation is bad towards the end, especially on "primero de junio" but he gets mad props for doing an entire message in Spanish, and I'm guessing its a better job than Clinton or Bush ever did with his loser nephew. He speaks better Spanish than I'm sure quite a lot of the youth who are being brought up in English.

Also, part of the message is about having been born on an island and understanding that island costs are higher. That's a strong message, and I'm sure he wins over big for zeroing in on these concerns.

I've heard GW, and he's horrible.

Oddly enough, Jeb speaks very good Spanish. I heard him give a whole speech in Spanish in Florida in the wake of 9/11. I wouldn't vote for him, but he's apparently not the idiot his brother is.

George P Bush even looks it...

Columba Garnica Gallo. That's pretty hispanic. She's from Mexico, and the family grew up in Miami.

In Miami people will start off by speaking to you in Spanish. If you don't respond in Spanish. They just might get mad at you...

Miami is a different world.

7. Unprecedented Campaign
I think we're about the witness one of the smartest Presidential campaigns in modern American history, and with the GOP and McSame in shambles, this could very well be a wash. The country is going to look a lot more purple with shades of blue when the dust settles, me thinks.

He is reaching out in ways that other politicians haven't. I hope things like this happen enough to counteract the real racist fears in this country. Reports from the grassroots have really freaked me out about all of the racism.

But it's ads like this that really encourage me that Obama is the guy top stop the racism dead in its tracks.
