Gas Roars Higher, Pressuring Holiday Travelers
The Associated Press
As consumers begin hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend, they face the reality it's costing more than ever to fill up the tank. The AP's Haven Daley reports from one gas station in California. (May 23)(locator - Gorda, CA)

GORDA, CALIFORNIA IS NAMED AFTER THE SPANISH WORD FOR FAT. BUT YOUR POCKETS WILL BE ANYTHING BUT IF YOU BUY GAS AT THE ONLY STATION IN TOWN.

Alex Spanos, Florida Tourist, says: "It doesn't really effect me as much on a motorcycle but if I was driving a Winnebago that might be a different story!" THERE'S NO PRICE SIGN HERE SO DRIVERS DON'T GET STICKER SHOCK UNTIL THEY PULL UP TO THE PUMP. THE CURRENT PRICE FOR REGULAR: FIVE-FIFTY-NINE A GALLON!

Bill Wollenhaupt, South Carolina Tourist, says: "Wow. I can't put it in words. It's unbelievable." SOME DRIVERS TAKE ONE LOOK AT THE PRICE AND PULL AWAY. OTHERS GET JUST ENOUGH GAS TO GET THEM TO THE NEXT STATION 40 MILES AWAY.

Marj Adickes, Texas Tourist, says: "We were here last year and it was five dollars so they haven't gone up very much. So at least they're consistent." Haven Daley, The Associated Press, says: "The station manager declined to talk to us on camera. But he has said the reason for his high prices is a generator that he has to help pay for that powers the entire town. That generator uses more than 100 gallons of gas a day."SOME TOURISTS FROM EUROPE SAY THE PRICE IS STILL ABOUT HALF OF WHAT THEY PAY BACK HOME.

Brian Shadbolt, British Tourist, says: "It's still ridiculously cheap but there are certain places that take advantage of the scarcity. We came through Death Valley and it was about $4.60 there. But generally I think you're still paying far too little." BESIDES, AT THIS GAS STATION ALONG CALIFORNIA'S PICTURESQUE COAST, YOU'RE ALSO PAYING FOR THE VIEW. HAVEN DALEY, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, GORDA, CALIFORNIA. The Associated Press.
