Seems Sheriff Andy would have a hard time fitting in as an interrogator at Gitmo.

6. Thank you for that, JohnyCanuck!
That was great. I'm a huge fan of the Andy Griffith Show. My husband laughs at me because I'm always saying stuff like "You know, this reminds me of the time Andy..." or "Well you know what Andy said about..." Lol, yeah, I'm strange.

Anyway, you made my day. Thanks!

Kicked, bookmarked and recommended!

19. It's a little known fact that W had a promising acting career that he blew
As a spot character on The Andy Griffith Show

"

- (Please note: This is a joke. I hope Earnest T. Bass isn't too upset by the comparison.)

31. Howard Morris died in 2005
But I bet he would have enjoyed the comparison. Ernest T. Bass was always spoiling for a fight without the slightest regard for the consequences.

Ernest T. might have been an idiot, but Howard Morris was a comic genius. I love everything he ever did.

26. Except some people would say that things were rough then if you
Were not white, right?

Now if you are a black poet who rhymes and hiphops a bit, you still ain't got no rights

Should your poetry be deemed inflammatory, you are looking at years in prison for
being a "terrorist"

Too bad we can't take the best parts of the fifties and sixties and meld them with whatever may be the real gains of the late sixties in terms of Civil Rights

What we have done isntead is to ensure that no one has any rights.

36. I completely endorse what you say.
My family is mixed race (white, black and native American)so I know the dark side as well.

That "combination" you mention would be a great American invention! :patriot:

39. Hey that is some ethnic background.
I don't think I really understood what it means to be an American until I was seated
in a Danish Cafeteria just outside Copenhagen, with my American travelling companions, and I realized we were surrounded by a sea of cousins.

I mean, Yeah, there was the occasional fat Dane, or the Dane who was too skinny, or maybe one that somehow managed to be ugly, but on the whole every person in that cafeteria (some 300 people were there) could easily have been at a family reunion.

THe four of us stuck out like sore thumbs - me, German, Irish and maybe Scandanavian (I'm adopted so don't know) and my friend Toulouse who is Jewish, and my friend Glen who is Polish and Scandanavian. And Ella who is black.

I felt really self-conscious. I knew "they" could tell we were "other"

And even though that fact carried no penalty, We certainly would not be asked to leave the cafeteria because we were "other" or sit at the back of the cafeteria or have a poorer selection of food, I really felt weird.

I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be black in this society before the Civil Rights era.
Or to grow up Native American in areas where the white settlers had sway. (I recently moved to a rural area of California, and there is one town where a family of "Indian fighters" had a great deal of power and respect. That town, Kelseyville, is the only town in this area where I really feel uncomfortable - you cannot mix things up there - not even little things like ordering a combo turkey and roast beef sandwich.

The killings were most prominent in the late teen and 1920's - we are talking about a town where the descendants who are still alive know these bloodthirsty ancesters as Granpa or Great Uncle.

29. The right wing can't have The Andy Griffiith Show. It belongs to us.
I'll say it right here: With all due respect to Ed Norton, Kramer, Spock, etc., Barney Fife was the greatest "second banana" character in television history. Thank you, Don Knotts.
The Andy Griffith Show was and is great television, filled with that liberal value - compassion. It's ours, not Rush Limbaugh's. I wish it had dealt with race, but it was of its time.
