1. Well, that takes care of the appeasement argument.
I love it! There should be enough bits and pieces of speeches in the archives, that Obama will be able to refute most of their arguments about everything.

Don't miss the end of that video.

14. That is strong stuff. Was that a recent interview?
Powell seems to be speaking directly about the recent flap.

We are really dependent on the press to do their jobs here. They are so used to simply repeating talking points that they may not remember what it means to seek the truth. I hope many in the press are able to spend 3 minutes reviewing this excellent review of the subject and then direct the appropriate questions at Bush and McCain.

It is excellent that McCain has decided to be in lock-step with Bush on this one because it strengthens the Obama argument that McCain is running for Bush's 3rd term. Bush never has understood the concept of diplomacy, and that's why we have such a mess. So McCain, you are welcome to the Bush side of the argument.

15. I think it's this one, Feb 10, 2008
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0802/10/le.01.html

...
BLITZER: What do you think of Senator Obama's statements suggesting that he would enter into a direct dialogue with the leaders not only of North Korea but Iran and even Cuba. Face to face talks. You're a former secretary of state. Here is what he said about the possibility of talking with the leaders of Iran.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) OBAMA: And the National Intelligence Estimate, the last report suggested that if we are meeting with them, talking to them and offering them both carrots and sticks, they are more likely to change their behavior, and we can do so in a way that does not ultimately cost billions of dollars, thousands of lives and hurt our reputation around the world.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

POWELL: I think we should be talking to the leaders of states that we have significant disagreements with.

BLITZER: Including state sponsors of terrorism?

POWELL: I was talking to Syria during the time that I was secretary of state. I visited Damascus on a fairly regular basis. They were always tough conversations.

Sometimes I came away with no progress. Sometimes I got things done. Sometimes I did things that helped Israel.

But you have to talk to folks that you may not necessarily like, and you can't put down impossible preconditions for conversation. You can't say, give me what I want before I will talk to you. That doesn't work. It won't work with Syria. It won't work with Iran.

So yes, I would be talking -- you know, we have an embassy that's open in Damascus, Syria. So I'd send the ambassador back and begin a dialogue.

BLITZER: What about Iran?

POWELL: I would talk to Iran. We were starting to have quiet conversations with Iran at a low level. Mr. Obama did not say he would talk. He said we.

And we were talking to Iran in a very low level, multilateral conversations, and were -- they had some value to them. And so, I would begin the conversations with the Iranians.

We're talking to them in Baghdad every few months about security matters, and if we can do that in Baghdad with our ambassador and their representatives, I don't see why we can't speak to them in other fora.

And it doesn't mean on a single issue. Just start talking to them about the full range of issues that have kept us in this situation which each other since 1979. It's time to move on.

America is a strong, powerful nation. We are politically powerful, economically powerful, militarily powerful. And it seems to me that with all of this power and all of this influence in the world, we should be willing to talk to nations that are basically weaker than we are. And we should not be afraid to be seen talking to them.

17. I think it really helped that Biden ran for President
It really raised his stature among the public, and also among the news media. He is clearly on the same page as Obama and is effectively part of the Obama rapid response team on foreign policy issues. I don't know if they have a formal understanding. If not, they should. The key thing is that Biden's candidacy made it absolutely clear that has has a solid grasp of the major foreign policy issues of our time, so when he goes on one of those Sunday shows, he doesn't have to waste any time establishing credentials.

Because of the importance of foreign policy in this campaign, and we know that the GOP is going to be screaming "terra, terra, terra" throughout this campaign, Biden may be Obama's most important ally.

18. He's said in interviews lately that he talks to Clinton and Obama weekly
The fact he promised both he would endorse neither but help them both gives Biden extra credibility - can't be seen as "well, that's 'cause he endorsed him/her"

The Biden junkies here at DU sense Biden's influence on their statements sometimes, particulary Obama, but of course we're biased. ;)

27. So now we know that the GOP is appeasement central
"If we decide to talk with the enemey, it's good statesmanship. If you indicate a willingness to engage them, it's a sign of weakness".

--This double standard was approved by the Republican Party and all right-wing talking heads

28. Good counterattack, but
I would like to see this discussion go to the next level. I would like to see Americans having an honest discussion about WHY it is accepted as a best practice to NOT talk to those that we have problems with. To me that entire cornerstone of this argument is fallacious and idiotic. I would love it if we could discuss these things on a real level rather than just the gotcha of "you did it to" while somehow allowing the assumption that diplomacy with enemies is somehow the "wrong" thing to do.

Unfortunately, I think such a discussion would fly over the heads of many that have been conditioned to believe in a black and white world thanks to the propaganda of years and decades.

32. we here at DU get it clearly-Republicans say one thing and do another,
but we pay attention to nuance, for we are the wonks. The average American won't have a clue because the video seems to bounce all over the place. It doesn't really, it's actually building a case but it's just too damn smart in the way it does it. It isn't Madison Avenue dumbed down. I love it, but I'd be surprised if the John Q Public did anything but scratch his head and say, I don't get what they're talkin' about.

So, basically, I'm saying kudos on great work. Perhaps you could send it to MoveOn or your goodhearted but slow neighbor and they could massage it for the average Joe. You know, the one who doesn't get nuance and the delecateness of negotiations.

As an aside, we don't sit down at the negotiating table with Syria for 50+ years and we send that Soviet Union expert, possible snugglebunny of the president, basically a yahoo?!? What the fuck are they thinking? Oh, scratch that, thinking isn't part of the Bush repertoire.

When I was writing my other note, I wasn't sure if this was your work. Now I know. While I had criticism based on the imagined "average Joe" from a personal standpoint, I am not worthy to shine your shoes. That was fucking rocked. You need to be in Obama's personal circle. I suppose it won't happen but I'd feel a fuck of a lot better about things were that the case. :yourock:
