Not sure what this is -- Explosion is just under a minute into video. Anyone speak Arabic? Odd that the tone/urgency of the speech didn't change at the point of the explosion. Don't know if this commentary on a video, live coverage or what.

Sidenote: it's also odd to see the news scroll heading from left to right.

1. That was not a nuke...
At night, TV cameras accentuate large explosions, make them look much larger than they really are, once the camera man gets everything set up for night shooting (dark conditions) large flashes, look MUCH larger.

14. Has nothing to do with the simple fact that conventional explosives did it
Face it, conventional explosives DO make mushroom clouds. ANY big explosion does! If it was Nuclear, people would know because it would spread lethal levels of radiation for miles. Even Tactical nukes would kill thousands with the radiation.

Sorry Bud - Its just a bunch of munitions going up together at an ammo dump.

3. That was when the ammunition
storage depot went up. There is some marine video of it somewhere on youtube too. It was much better/scarier.

17. Here is a link to one story.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2006-10-10-iraq-ammo-fire_x.htm and a link to another video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR0EZyaHrBw
It did make the news though the misadministration tried hard to say it was an accident and that there were no fatalities.

4. I think it was an ammo dump of some sort.
I would tend to doubt it was tactical nuclear weapon, though I would not put it below BushCo to use one. I have seen this clip a number of times elsewhere, some called it a gas explosion, some called it an ammo dump explosion.
The mushroom cloud shape is not the exclusive characteristic of nuclear bomb, small conventional charges used in other applications, other than military, quite often have that classic mushroom cloud shape.

5. ANY big explosion can look like that.
Any large explosion (like hundreds of pounds of expolsive, say an ammo dump,) causes a mushroom cloud and a flash like that.

That was no nuke. Not in the least.

8. Rubbish. That looks like one of two ordinance dump fires
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 01:20 AM by Warpy
in Baghdad, only this one is Arabic voice over without sound.

Daisy cutters were going up in the US film, looking exactly like that explosion, only in color. The soldiers making the film with salty commentary were nearly flattened by the concussion. The dump (if I'm counting correctly) was about a mile away.

Nukes don't go off in fires. Nukes also cause a hell of a lot more damage than this did. In addition, the guys filming this stuff would have had their retinas seared.

Here's the video shot by the military guys: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1410660598904719984&q=us+army+ammo+dump&hl=en

9. this was the largest ammo dump in baghdad
someone threw some ordnance into the dump and destroyed an unknown amount of ordnance and support vehicles. the army has never released any details about what happened. i read one iraqi blogger who lived fairly close to this area and he could`t find out anything either...ya it was a series of big blasts

10. If that was a TACNUKE...
Where are the reports of people dying in Bagdhad of radiation sickness? Where was the camera person getting knocked for a loop by the shock wave?

Nah...No TACNUKE. Just an ammo dump that was hit by mortar fire.

11. Convential Explosives.
They leave mushroom clouds as well. It was too small for a Nuke. Even the tiny 1Kt bombs are worse than that. It was probably an ammo dump going off.

About 1:40 into the movie, an explosion makes a perfect Mushroom cloud. Nothing Nuclear about it.

18. I think the original poster
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 01:10 PM by CC
might of been using the title the Arabic poster/news used. Going back to search for articles on it for an earlier reply a lot of the the Arabic articles were calling it a tactical nuke dropped by the US. There are spin meister in every culture that will skew and use things to their own advantage.

21. What claims?
I don't know what I have "claimed" beyond a guess that the original poster used the title on the video as the title of this thread?
That some Arabic news/people is calling it a nuke http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Camp+Falcon+Ammo+Depot+explodes&btnG=Google+Search first page (and on) and follow any link.
Or that it was an ammo dump, see here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=12835&mesg_id=12877
I don't see where I asked you to do anything.

22. Because that was the vid title on YouTube
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 06:55 PM by CornField
I thought we were supposed to give the title on YouTube as the title of the thread here... has that changed?

Edited to add: I was quite surprised to return here tonight and find this thread still active. LOL! I posted it because I questioned it and, as always, my fellow DUers were able to set me straight on what it was and what it wasn't. I figured it would just die after that. I guess I'm doubly shocked that someone(s) seem to be questioning my posting of it at all.... ah well...

Edited yet again to say I went and read Earl's handy-dandy, short-n-sweet FAQ on the forum. Sure enough:
4. VIDEO TITLES
You do not have to use the same title as the original YouTube video, but please make sure that the title you enter matches the content of the video. This will make videos much easier to find.

That's good to know & my apologies for leaving the controversial title as the thread subject.

20. IIRC that was an ammo dump on fire (Al Rashid?) last year,
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 01:48 PM by TheBaldyMan
that footage is from last year, there were several large secondary explosions that night, other shots from different cameras that were closer showed rockets and shells leaving smoke trails as they were blown out from the ammunition storage berms.

Storage berms direct the blast upwards, this adds to the 'mushroom cloud' effect. This wasn't a nuke but it did involve some very powerful explosions during the course of that night.

It was newsworthy at the time because this ammo facility was the main depot for heavy ordnance in Iraq. Troops were left short of a great many munitions and reserves of ammunition were dangerously low until extra supplies coulld be ferried out.

There was a longer film taken by a US soldier that was availiable on Google videos last year, it was shot on a hand held video camera and about 20-30 minutes long. It was much closer and showed more detail. Definately not a tactical nuke.
